Windows 7 - Unable to Install Visual Studio 2008 Professional on Vista Ultimate SP1 - dd_install_vs_procore_90.txt (0/6)

I am trying to install Visual Studio 2008 Professional on a new build of Vista Ultimate SP1. It got
up to the point where the arrow points to Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. The error says:
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup
---------------------------
Error 1330.A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file j:\cab27.cab has an
invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Then setup said it was deleting temporary files and then doing a roll-back. At which point it died
and I got:
[Window Title]
Microsoft Windows
[Main Instruction]
setup.exe has stopped working
[Content]
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify
you if a solution is available.
[Close program]
Then I go a popup with a load of error messages but no way to copy them. I couldn't even expand the
window to show all of them so I could do a Print Screen and capture them.
When I tried to close it I got a popup saying to "Please wait while setup is sending your feedback.
The green bar seems frozen. When I closed the "A problem caused..." popup noted above it went away.
I also got a popup saying something was searching for a solution but all it did was open my home
page in IE.
I downloaded the ISO image from the MSDN download site
(en_visual_studio_2008_professional_x86_x64wow_dvd_X14-26326.iso) and created a virtual DVD using
Virtual CD 9.2.0.1.
I tried to find the CRC305.exe to validate the ISO image but all I get is:
folder."
Some of the links take me to the Tools and Resources\Platform SDK and DDK's area. The newest entry
is over three years old (Platform SDK - April 2005 Edition (English)).
I finally found the download for fciv.exe.
SHA1: 69702515F0D7E085CBEC39BFF3A3B7AE5050CA3C From the subscriber download for VS 2008 Professional
SHA1: 69702515f0d7e085cbec39bff3a3b7ae5050ca3c From fciv.exe
Aside from one being uppercase and one being lowercase they look the same.
The installation log has some interesting entries such as:
10/28/08,23:04:30] PFR: PRE_INSTALL, DELETE, , , C:\Windows\system32\ZoneLabs\spyware.dat.zlbak, (
---- ), ( Thu Oct 16 10:50:55 2008 )
Perhaps someone can explain why a Microsoft product installation is doing anything with ZoneLabs'
spyware database.
Finally the killer log entry:
[10/29/08,00:00:01] vs70uimgr: DisplayMessage_START:Error 1330.A file that is required cannot be
installed because the cabinet file j:\cab27.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate
that the cabinet file is corrupt.

installed because the cabinet file j:\cab27.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate

I have attached the log file for those that might be interested.

Interesting that your question appears to have been posted seven times in
quick succession.
You might try a different virtual optical drive program. Daemon Tools has a
long-standing good reputation.

Was the question posted seven times or did your news reader break apart the attached text file into
seven parts? I only posted the question once.
I don't think it was the virtual optical drive program. But I will try attaching the ISO file to a
virtual machine and see if it has the same problem.
Stewart Berman replied...

I cloned a virtual Windows XP Pro SP3 machine that I use as a starter system as it has nothing but
Windows XP SP3 installed. I booted it, logged in and captured the Visual Studio 2008 ISO file as
the CD/DVD and started the installation. It failed with the same type of error but for a different
CAB file:
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup
---------------------------
Error 1330.A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file d:\cab12.cab has an
invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
The installation on Vista Ultimate SP1 failed processing cab27.cab. I assume it did not need
cab12.cab for a Vista installation.
It would appear that the ISO file has bad data even through the SHA1 code matches the one published
by Microsoft.
If I double click on the .cab files they appear to open normally. Is there a tool that will check
their digital signatures?
Stewart Berman replied...
Found SignTool.exe. If I mount the ISO image using Virtual CD and run SignTool using the /pa
option it successfully verifies the .cab files that caused the installations to fail.
So the SHA1 checks out for the ISO image. Individual verification of the .cab files says they are
good. Yet the Visual Studio 2008 installation process says they are bad.
Now if I was installing from a DVD drive the problem could be due to bad spots on the media. But I
am trying to install from an ISO image sitting on a SATA drive in the machine that the installation
is running on. There should not be timing issues -- either the files are good or they are not.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since opening each cab seems to work, you might want to try extracting the
iso file into a directory and running it straight from there. It might work
out better that way, since it won't be trying to read into the iso file as
it installs. Good luck!

I wonder why someone would keep butting their head against wall and not just
burn a DVD to do the install. I am a strong believer that when it hurts to
do something one way that it might be better to try another way.
Stewart Berman replied...

I keep an Install partition that contains everything needed to rebuild any of my systems. This
includes images of all of the CDs and DVDs. The intent is to be able to easily rebuild a system or
build a new one quickly from the installation media. Visual Studio 2008 is the only product that
has problems installing from an ISO image (whether from a hard drive in the same machine the
installation is being done or attached to a virtual machine).
Besides I have two notebooks without CD/DVD readers. If you read the thread in the Visual Studio
Setup news group (1c02h4poa9arldg2nf30v63a34kot7ig6g@4ax.com) you would know that I was able to
install Visual Studio 2008 on a notebook running XP SP3 from an ISO image on another workstation
using Virtual CD v9.
BTW, there are a number of reports of Visual Studio installations failing form a DVD and Microsoft's
recommendation is to copy the files to the hard drive of the machine it is being installed on.
It is clear that there is a bug in the Visual Studio installer. Probably a race condition between
threads reading the files and the one that verifies them. (This is pure guest work as I have not
tried to debug the problem.)
As to butting my head against a stone wall -- if you do it at the correct frequency you can
sometimes bring the wall down.
There's your reality and my reality. Sometimes they overlap -- sometimes they don't.
