Best way to create an Knowledge portal

Hi,

I am trying to create an Knowledge portal for my project.
Right know we are having so many Pdf's present in a specified
location.we are coming up with an application which needs to behave as
like as MSDN. Especially if a search happens then all the files which
has that search string needs to be displayed .
Could anyone suggest me on what approach i can follow to implement
the same.i.e Is there any API/tools/commands available to do the
operation which i mentioned above or Microsoft already offers any API
to implement custom application similar to MSDN.

I can guess that the official Microsoft answer to this would be "use
SharePoint". You can set up a shared area that presents itself as a
website and you can place calendars, files, contact lists etc, then open
up access by setting permissions.
