One of my hotmail addresses is "windows live". How do I restore it to the
original hotmail format?

You can't.
Windows Live Hotmail is the upgrade to Hotmail and will be applied to all
accounts over the next months.
You can use the link on the lower left to "switch to classic view" for viewing,
but you can no longer switch back to Hotmail since Windows Live Hotmail is out
of beta now.

I find that I can still switch between MSN Hotmail and Windows Live Hotmail.
That's "Options", "Switch to MSN Hotmail", "Switch Back, "No thanks, I'm not
interested in taking the survey". But that is with a paid MSN account. A
free Hotmail account that I use is as you say. I find the classic view
tolerable.
Now that Windows Live Hotmail is out of beta, are they going to do anything
to my paid MSN accounts? Is "MSN Hotmail" a horse of a different color?

I believe that it actually depends on the account. If the account was migrated
to Windows Live Hotmail as part of the migration, rather than selecting to
switch manually, you can't switch back. If you made the selection in advance of
the migration of your account, you can still switch back. Eventually, all
accounts will be Windows Live Hotmail only.

It says on the MSN Member Center page: "Windows Live - Upgrade for free and
unify your online world." But then it says "This computer does not meet the
system requirements for Windows Live. You can upgrade to Windows Live on any
computer with Windows® XP Service Pack 2 or Windows VistaT." I guess I am
doomed to a continued existence with MSN 9.5 until I upgrade this computer
to XP SP2 or better. However, on the Hotmail web site I can freely switch
back and forth between Hotmail and Windows Live Hotmail with the click of a
button. Right now, I remain somewhat confused as to what Windows Live
actually is.
So what is this Windows Live free upgrade that is available on the MSN
Member Center page. I know, I should spring for the XP or Vista CD and find
out.

Legacy pop3 accounts should have the 'Try the Classic[top center right]
and Switch to Classic[lower left]' option if accessed via the Windows
Live Hotmail interface. One should also have 5gb of storage vs the 4gb
for a premium Live Hotmail account or 2GB for a free Live Hotmail
account.
Not sure how a partner account handles the capacity or the options.
Earle, your one of the few that post from the partner category. Can you
check your capacity via the web interface ?

XPSp2 should be a no brainer if XP sp2 or XP Rtm is the installed o/s,
especially for IE and Windows security and related updates.
In the vein of Hotmail, Windows Live Hotmail is a different interface
with additional features not available in Hotmail(larger mailbox and
individual message capacity, drag and drop etc)
Windows Live is a variety of applications

This is for a paid account with two secondary accounts:
Primary "@msn.com" -- 5 GB
Secondary "@msn.com" -- 5 GB
Secondary "@q.com" -- 2 GB
Also, when upgrading, the "@msn.com" accounts get the opportunity to win a
free laptop. They also have the option to "Switch to MSN Hotmail", which
the "@q.com" account does not.

Earle

Interesting...other folks have reported that secondary msn.com accounts
as sub accounts on the primary account only have 2GB not 5GB

Curioser and curioser, more data follows, four accounts total.
Primary "@msn.com" -- 5 GB
Secondary "@msn.com" -- 5 GB
Secondary "@msn.com" -- 2 GB
Secondary "@q.com" -- 2 GB

Thanks Earle,
I'm more interested in the second item at 5GB.
Is this secondary account part of the 'partner' Primary account.
If so, you continue to have unique situations with that account

Now that I've had time to investigate here's additional info from my and
the spouses personal accounts and obviously more variation in the pie
slicing.
All sizes reported as shown after logging on to the web interface. All
are converted to the full version of Windows Live Hotmail(not the
Classic)
Primary Legacy pop3 - 5gb (in use since 1995)
Secondary to legacy pop3 - 4gb (in use since Oct 2002)
Secondary to legacy pop3 - 2gb (in use since 2007)
Stand Alone accounts
Hotmail.com free account - 5gb (in use since Aug 1998)
Hotmail.com premium account($20/yr) - 4gb (in use since Sept 1999)
Msn.com free http account - 5gb (in use since Sept 2003)
Hotmail.com free account - 2gb (in use since Jan 2004)
As you can see in some cases, age of the account would appear to have an
impact on capacity
- exception is the Premium Hotmail account which has less capacity than
the stand alone free msn.com account though 4 yrs older.
The 4gb vs 2gb could be tied to the timing of converting the account to
Live Mail(which iirc doubled the base capacity for conversion) though in
the case of the stand alones the Hotmail premium preceded conversion of
the Msn.com free http account but not the other hotmail.com free
account.
To paraphrase Doc Holliday, capacity knows no bounds. The web page
published capacity(initial ??) for both Classic and Full version under
the 'Features' option is 2Gb.

The second account listed came with a Qwest DSL service I got in 2002 or
2003. The first account I got somewhat later as part of MSN dialup service
used at another location. For a while I maintained two residences. (I
don't recommend doing this unless there are compelling economic reasons, or
unless you are rich enough to maintain domestic staff.)
In mid 2004 I no longer needed the residence with the DSL, so I terminated
the service. By that time I was using the primary DSL account (second
account listed) for most of my personal email, so I added it to my MSN
dialup account as a secondary account. In early 2007 I finally got Qwest
DSL at the second location, and "converted" the MSN dialup account to Qwest
DSL with MSN.
Now I have the original primary MSN dialup account as primary, the original
primary DSL account as a secondary account, and two other accounts I
established later as secondary accounts. The "@q.com" address is pretty
spiffy.

Earle

Thanks Earle,
I still find it extremely odd that a premium Windows Live Hotmail
account(and still advertised as such) is 1GB less than some longer term
free account.
Effectively then for most the difference being no ads, no expiration.
From what I've learned of free account holders most ignore the ads and
use it regularly to avoid expiration.
Thus if choosing the premium plan would beg one to suggest the payee to
at least recall the mystical utopian prose theatre entrance requirements
penned by Herman Hesse. "Price of admission, 'Your Mind' "
On an even lighter note, a few years ago I mentioned Hesse to a young
Emory college graduate with a degree in Comparative
Literature/Journalism and her response was ..."Wasn't he one of those
German guys in the Newburg trials"
At least half of his nationality was correct :)

Another tidbit. When logged on to the secondary account with the 5 GB
limit, "Windows Live Account", "Billing Information" shows information
associated with the cancelled Qwest DSL account, for which it used to be the
primary account. It has the defunct Qwest Account ID# and the phone number
associated with it, which I haven't used in three years.

I'm curious. Is 2 GB vs. 5 GB of storage really an issue? I have some 10
GB free on my local machine, and if my Outlook Express Store Folder filled
up I guess I could buy a bigger hard disk. Surely your new mail clients
have the option for local storage?

I don't know anyone that uses the full 2GB-5GB online range for an http
account but that doesn't mean someone doesn't. I may not be the norm,
but I've never seen my local OE, OL or WLM or online(web interface)
capacity surpass 50MB.
Extra hard disk space ? Not sure if that's significant either.
I'd be more concerned with OE corruption once its store folder surpassed
2GB(which seems to be the defacto standard for those experienced
troubleshooters dealing with OE corruption).
WLM usage a Message Store file and stores individual messages in
separate folders for each newsgroup(.nws) and mail folder(.eml)

Where can I find the incoming server and outgoing server names for Windows
Live Hotmail? I am trying to install my cellphone to send e-mails manually.
Also need to know where I find my username (not my e-mail name) and password?
I thank you for letting me know the connection type: POP3. :-)

If you have POP access on the computer, that would mean you have a legacy MSN
account. If you are accessing via the web on a computer, you will need to use a
web browser on the phone to access your Windows Live Hotmail account. You can
get there through the "new" MSN Mobile portal page.
You can learn more about the MSN Mobile site here:
http://mobile.msn.com/pc/en-us/mobileweb.aspx
On your phone, use http://mobile.msn.com
Your username for Hotmail *is* your email address or LiveID - user@hotmail.com
and the password associated with it.
