Windows XP Home SP3
Internet Explorer 7
===============
When Itry to get MSN Explorer I get the following message:

that is not available.Insert the 'MSN Messenger 7.5' disk and click OK".

This program came with the computer when I bought it from Dell.

I had been using MSN Explorer since then without any problems.

I started having this situation for about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Please let me know if you can help me.

Thank you.

I think you can overcome this by downloading and installing the latest version
of Windows Live Messenger from http://get.live.com
Are you an MSN subscriber? If not, then you don't want to be starting MSN
Explorer. Use Windows Explorer.

Steve,

I found that the problem I have with MSN Explorer is with the updating from
SP2 to SP3.

I used "System Restore" and I went back to June 2nd. After that I went to
MSN Explorer and I did not get any error message.

Then I updated again to SP3 and I got the error in MSN Explorer.

Evidently, the problem is with SP3.

Best regards

Asked earlier in this thread...
Are you an MSN subscriber?

What do you wish to do ?
- If yes to the above question, Install or reinstall MSn Premium software(note: the Explorer name was dropped, now just MSN
Premium.
- Install Msn Messenger 7.5, Windows Live Messenger 8.1 or 8.5 ?

If an MSn subscriber, Dialup or DSL(partner ?) ?

I am not a MSN subscriber but the version I have is "free".

I don't know of any advantage of the MSN browser over a normal web browser,
such as MS Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox. I have always blown the
MSN browser off of any system I have ever used, and relegated MS Internet
Explorer to fetching Windows Updates. I have set Opera as my default
browser, though I tinker with others from time to time.

Nearly as I can tell, the only reason to use the MSN browser is for Internet
access with MSN as an ISP, either as a stand alone dial service, or as a
partner, such as with Qwest. And even with the MSN Internet dial service,
I'd be inclined to set up a DUN for connecting, and use a normal web browser
for surfing.

In that case, I'd definitely abandon the MSN software, and keep SP3 around.

The version of MSN Explorer you have is the original that shipped with XP before
it became a product only updated for paid subscribers. I'd recommend simply
leaving MSN Explorer alone, updating to SP3 (for the security benefits) and just
use Internet Explorer for web browsing (or an alternative browser such as
Firefox). You do not need to remove the non-working MSN Explorer as it takes up
little space.

Version 7 is the last available free version(not requiring a subscription) either provided on disk or via an OEM(This would be
rare, since the majority of the last OEM included free version were in the 5.4 vintage or a desktop/program menu shortcut to obtain
version 6(subscription required).

Why you wish to 'get MSn Explorer' without a subscription to MSn remains unclear since all available versions from Msft require a
paying subscription either as dial up, dsl, or MSn Premium partner account.

Imo...remove MSn Explorer in add-remove/Windows Components(if not present, you'll have to change the hide value in Sysoc.inf to
unhide to make the option available), install SP3, then use IE6 or 7 as your primary browser.

I can't speak for other partner services, but Qwest Choice DSL with MSN
Premium is also Qwest by Windows Live with all functionality duplicated and
available to Internet Explorer. In other words, the only reason to use MSN
Explorer is if you like it, are used to it and don't want to change. The
following link explains all. I don't know if you can view it from a
non-Qwest connection, but you could try.

http://kai03.qwest.com/WindowsLive/Default.aspx?page=MigrateToWLTest

I haven't seen the new Qwest QuickConnect CD, but from the information I
have it is "probably" Live/IE enabled.

Cheers,

Earle
