Greetings,
To attempt to correct this, shut down Messenger entirely by right-clicking on its icon in the
notification area and choosing Exit, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/remove_wlmpolicies.reg
Then try signing in again.

Jonathan,
Thank you so much for this fix.
I was not able to sign on after installing IE7. I ran your .reg file
and all is well.

Hi,
Great. However, I don't think this is related to IE7 per se, it was just coindental that
both happened at the same time.

Hi Eric,
There was a misconfiguration Messenger server-side which caused some invalid policies to be
placed on people who logged in at the time. By running this .reg file it simply removed
those registry entries where the policies are kept, therefore allowing you to log back in.

Jonathan,
Your fix worked perfectly - Thank you! I also wanted to let you that my
issue happened after an IE 7 install as well. I know coincidences happen but
I wanted you to know that it's not an isolated instance. Again thanks for the
fix!
Jonathan Kay [MVP] replied...
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. I think the reason why XP updates, IE7 etc. have been blamed is
because they all happened at about the same time.

Windows installer 3.1 & IE7 fails to install Windows 7 3 weeks ago I upgraded my motherboard, processor, RAM & display card. Since I can't clean install a new windows XP cause my old system has all needed programs & settings to my needs (very hard I used to option of repair install, inserted the XP CD that gave me "upgrading windows", & all went OK, new drivers installed, removed old ones. Funny thing is my IE7 is goes till the point where registry editing starts & stops installation & rolls back changes to IE6 & windows restarts. . Same when I try to update Windows installer to 3.1, it stops installation at the point or registry changing & rolls back account, how come? Why both installation stops at the registery editing point?
