Windows 7 - Notification tray internet connection icon missing

Asked By Bob Barker

Has anyone been able to restore the internet connection icon to the
notification tray after using CCeaner to deleate the tray cache? I have tried
all of the solution that I found in a week or more of searching Google (with
the exception of rebuilding a dll file). I may not have ability to do this
and would hate to cause real damage by screwing this up. Network works
good, internet works good, computer is clean and fast. Kluker xp sp2 with
only 768m of ram.

I have been able to fix just about every problem that is come along (except
lighting strike), But this one has me stomped. Any help would be greatly
appreciated....Thanks in advance.

Log to Control Panel/Network Connection.
Right click on the local area connection, make sure that the box at the
bottom is checked.

I do not have an internet connection icon in my network connections. The
title shows "LAN or High Speed Internet", but there is no icon for "High
Speed Internet". I have one for 1394 connection to the printer and I can
toggle that icon on and off. I have one my wireless network and I can toggle
that one also. And I have local area icon for my NIC which is disabled but
if I plug in cable to the router, I can see that icon in the notification
tray also. It shows the connection to be disabled, which it is. Like I said,
I have tried all the setting, deleting IconStreams, stop and restart explorer,
ect, ect....but have not found a fix so far.

I am thinking that I may not have an icon for internet connection in the
PastIconStreams key in the registry, but I cannot find how to check for the
default values. If windows rebuilds the IconStreams when explorer starts, it
maybe a corrupted file but I cannot identify which one...

Hi
I do not know exactly which type of connection you are using as an active
connection, it might be that you have some 3rd party utility that runs the
Wireless and displays an Icon, and it needs to be reconfigured. In the
native Windows Network the icon is associated with the Wireless and or the
Wire NIC connections.

You have me confused here. I have never ever seen a "High Speed
Internet" icon in my 7 years of using XP. I have 2 wireless connections
listed and a LAN icon. If I am connected by cable to a router the LAN
icon shows "traffic" and if by wireless the wireless icon shows traffic.
In "Network Connections" all three are classed as "LAN or High Speed
Internet" to distinguish them from "Dial-up".
You say that you can get both your wireless and LAN icons in the
notification tray so I do not see what your problem is.
Did you at some time have either a USB modem or a direct connection to
a modem which you no longer use? If so it is possible that the icon you
may have used has been deleted from the tray and it would not reappear
unless you decided to use that device again.

I am using a Linksys wireless adapters and it connects to the network and the
internet. There is only one icon on the notification tray, a single computer
with the radiating wave form for wireless connection. All well and good.
However, up to about three weeks ago, I had the dual computer icon also in
the tray. My other desk top also had this same icon. It has always been
connected wirelessly. Now it only shows the wireless icon. My desktop has
been wireless for about a year. I cannot find any configuration in the
adapters to display an icon for internet connection. Do you know of any
place where the default string for PastIconStreams is available? I would
like to compare.

I misspoke when I said "High Speed Internet". I was actually "Internet
Gateway" and was separated from LAN and High Speed Internet in network
connections.

As I described to Jack, both of my desktops lost this Internet Gateway icon
at the same time. Clicking the "status" button on this icon would show
traffic for the internet.

When the cable is plugged into the Linksys router, I see that icon in the
tray, however, I do not see the "Internet Gateway" icon in network
connections. It was there once and I'd like to get it back....

Hi
It is Not a matter of missing Icon The tray does not cache icons per-se. If
whatever connection/application that this Icon was related to, is not On,
and Not configured to show the Icon, there will Not be an icon in the
traybar.

OK! I fixed it......for now....maybe!

Seems that the sequence of loading the UPnP Device Discovery and UPnP
service some how get confused.

I disabled both services. Then disabled UPnP in the router. Then disabled
both services in Windows Network Components. Reboot. Re-registered all of
the DLL files (atl, hnetcfg, netshell, netcfgx, and netman) and rebooted.
Went into router and enabled UPnP and set selected SSDP and UPnP in Windows
Network Components, and the icon in the Notification Tray appeared and the
Services were turn on automatically.

Thanks everyone for your help!
