Vista 64 desktop changes resolution by itself

Asked By Dave Bauer

My Vista 64 desktop lowers the resolution of my monitor by itself and
scrambles the icons, is there a fix for this?

You'll have to give us a bit more detail, Dave.

You'll have to give us a bit more detail, Dave. What monitor, what video
card, and in what situation does it change the resolution would all be
useful information.

Dave,
In addition to the data requested by Charlie, does your monitor "disappear"
from Device Manager when this issue shows up?
How to you get the resolution back to the normal state?
In the meantime, this msft "oldie" (still works up to Windows 7)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272
can patch (not fix) the problem you mention.
Just run devcon.exe with no parameters and check if normal resolution is
restored.
Trying will not hurt.
I have to do it from time to time when my screen resolution drops down after
resuming from standby or when waking up the monitor.

I experienced this in the RC. Cured it by d/ling the latest video drivers
for my card & windows 7 64. Probably the same for Vista.

Here is more info:
I have a 24" Gateway monitor,FPD2485W, and the video card has been both an
onboard ATI HD3300 Radeon and an external Nvidea GeForce 6800, both do it
and I cant pin down exactly what precedes the problem, its after a shutdown
and happens maybe once a week. Its shutdown and restarted maybe 2-3 times a
day. The devices dont drop out of device manager as far as I can tell, they
are always there when I check it.
I looked at the devcon thing and am not sure what it is, I will look into
it more.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.
Disable the onboard video in the bios.

Disable the onboard video in the bios. You cannot have both and not expect
possible conflicts.

Dave,
devcon forces hardware redetection (quite fast, no reboot, just a few secs).
It does the same job as "Search for new hardware" option in Device Manager.

I found out that it happens after a reboot with out the monitor being on the
system. I have a switch to switch the monitor & keyboard between 2
computers. If I reboot the Vista X64 machine with out the monitor/keyboard
switched to the Vista machine it will do this, I have to reinstall the
correct video drivers to correct the problem. I think if Vista doesnt find a
monitor it will install some default video drivers, which are the wrong
ones? It didnt do this on Win XP.
I am using an external video card and the onboard video is disabled during
all this.
Thanks
