How to import Thunderbird mail to the WLM release?

Asked By Imageman

OK, it's my fault! I disliked WM & WLM beta so much that I switched to
Mozilla Thunderbird. Now that the released version of WLM is out, and it
runs on Vista 64, how do I import all those thousands of emails from
Thunderbird? Thanks for your help - IM

I do not think you can import.

I do not think you can import. You will need to export from thunderbird in
CSV and then import in WLM. At least that is how I had to do it. And some
info may get lost or misread

Bill

CSV is for contacts, not emails.

CSV is for contacts, not emails.
Check the Thunderbird forums for an add-on that will allow
export of emails in a compatible (.EML) format.

Dave-

Thanks ever so much. I have been looking for information on doing this very
thing.

I just installed the extension you linked to and used it to export some
stored messages from TB to WLM. Works like a charm.

Just a couple additions for others attempting this.
1) Export from TB in .eml and save to a location in My Documents where
it can be found easily
2) Import to WLM in Windows Live Mail format
3) It will be imported into an IMPORTED MAIL folder
4) From there the messages can be moved to whatever storage folders

I downloaded from http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html. Opened thunderbird and clicked on Tools -> Add Ons and clicked on install button and picked the file i downloaded and the export/import tools installed properly. After automatic restart of thunderbird, i could see it under Tools menu as ImportExportTools submenu option.

I was able to export each folder by choosing ExportImportTools->Export All messages in Folder->EML format. You can see the progress in the status bar of thunderbird. Once it is saved, it is easy to import from Windows Live Mail.

The option ExportImportTools->Export Folders with subfolders option to export all my mail did not work for me. It exports only the folders and not the mail messages inside them.
