Windows 7 - Deleting email very slow

Hi

I just moved from a Mac to Windows 7 and now use WLM.

I connected via IMAP to my mac email account.

I notice that deleting email now takes a couple of seconds. It just freezes
and then the email deletes. If I do the same thing from my hotmail account in
WLM it deletes the emails instantly.

Please advise

IMAP stores a copy of the email on the server. You will not delete until
it is deleted, also, from the server. If you get mail from different
IMAP servers times will differ.

Bottom line, it is not a problem

Clarification:
IF you are using Google IMAP, "deleting" a message from WLM only "archives"
the message on the Google server (meaning, it removes all message labels).

To delete a message from the Google IMAP server using WLM, drag it to
Google's "Trash" folder where sync with the server ... theoretically Google
will purge it in 30 days, unless you do so manually (whether Google
physically deletes the message is a completely different issue).

Sorry, but this is a WLM problem. When I used outlook or any other mail
program it would do the deleting in the background so that I could still do
other work in my mail client, but WLM pops up a stupid dialog every time.
Actually what is worse is when I click on an un-read message and then the
stupid dialog pops up letting you know it is sending the changes to the IMAP
server (as in marking it un-read). It does not need to show me this! It
does not need to block my work and make me wait for this unnecessary dialog.

So what is actually happening when WLM "deletes" something using the delete
button? Contrary to the earlier posts, it does not seem to remove any labels
from the Gmail message. The deleted emails are still in my inbox and still
have the label that was assigned to them by a filter. Nothing happens as far
as I can tell except they disappear from the WLM inbox.

I presume you have added your GMail address to WLMail as an IMAP
account.

GMail has not adopted some of the more usual IMAP practices. In
particular, deletion hides messages in WLMail - but does not
remove them from the GMail server 'in the clouds'.

The best way to delete GMail messages from WLMail is to drag them
from the Inbox (in WLMail) and drop them into the 'Bin' folder.
Then, select the message names in the 'Bin' folder and delete
them from there.

If the 'Bin' folder is not visible in WLMail, please post back -
because I can suggest some changes to the configuration settings.

Bob,
Thanks for the note. I found a work-around. I have to make sure I have
chosen the gmail trash folder as one of the IMAP folders to synch, then I
have to move the messages to that folder, and then wait for gmail to
eventually delete, or go to gmail on the web and manually empty the folder.

I do not have a "bin" folder showing in WLM. Tell me more!

As stated previously, GMail has not adopted some of the more
usual IMAP practices. In particular, GMail does not have
separate folders on its servers. Everything remains in one big
folder 'in the clouds'. However, users can label or designate
individual messages as 'Inbox', 'Sent Mail', etc. The GMail
system does not play nicely with WLMail, unless you make some
changes to the standard configuration.

The following recommendations involve re-configuring GMail via
the web interface. Then, you need to change a few settings in
WLMail.

Close WLMail

Use your browser to sign into your GMail account
Click on Settings (top of page), followed by Labels

The list of Labels comprises two parts. Let us deal firstly with
the System Labels.

Check the IMAP boxes for those Labels that you want to see, when
you run WLMail. ( Inbox is checked by default.) I have checked
the boxes for Sent Mail, Spam and Bin.
Uncheck the boxes for any Labels that you DON'T to appear as
folders in WLMail. TIP. To prevent duplication in WLMail,
uncheck the IMAP box for the 'All Mail' Label.

The second part of the list contains Labels for your personal
folders (if any). WLMail has almost certainly created some
additional labels (or special folders) in that section. You
do not need them, so you can safely delete any labels in this
section that you have not created yourself. (Don't worry. They
are only labels, so you will not lose any messages.)

Sign out from the webmail interface.

Open WLMail and click on Tools / Accounts.
Select your GMail account and click on Properties.
Select the IMAP tab and delete anything in the Root folder field.
Check the box marked 'Check for new messages in all folders'.
Uncheck the box marked 'Store special folders on IMAP server'.
Click on 'Apply' (if visible), followed by OK.

If there is a 'Tools' option at the top of the WLMail page, click
on 'Tools'.
If the 'Tool' option is hidden, press 'Alt' to reveal the option.
Then, click on 'Tools'.
Click on 'IMAP folders ...' and select your GMail account
Click on 'Reset List', followed by OK.

The folder list in WLMail will now look like:
Inbox
[GMail]
Bin
Sent Mail
Spam
(plus any personal folders you might have created)

These folders will correspond exactly to the Labels on the
webmail interface. You can right click on each folder name, to
personalise your synchronisation preferences (Choose from Don't
synchronise; All messages; New Messages only; or Headers only).
I have opted for Headers only, because WLMail synchronises much
more quickly.

When you want to delete a message, do not select Delete or press
the Delete key. If you do, the message will disappear from
WLMail, but will remain on the web interface.

Instead, you should move the message (or drag and drop it) into
the 'Bin' folder. Once a message is in the Bin, you can delete
it from WLMail in the normal way. Alternatively, Google will
delete it automatically after it has been in the Bin for 30 days.

Hope this helps.

Well, to start with, I do not have the ability to enable folders/labels for
IMAP from within Gmail. When I go to the labels tab there are options to
show hide and delete. Even when I go to the old Gmail UI I only get rename
or remove for labels. And in the IMAP tab the only choice is enable/disable.

Have you enabled the IMAP functionality via the GMail webmail
interface?

If so, there ishould be two ways to open the labels menu:

Method 1
Sign into your GMail account
Click on 'Settings'., at the top right hand edge of the window
(options include Settings, Help, and Sign Out)
In the Settings Menu, click on Labels.

Method 2
Sign into your GMail account
Go to your Inbox
Click on Labels, followed by 'Manage Labels'
Create New Account
