Win7 x64, can't see my replies in MS public newsgroups

Asked By Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]
01-Feb-10 05:16 PM
Until recently I was a happy WinXP Pro & OE user for newsgroup access.

Now running Win7 x64, and I have just installed Windows Mail Desktop. I have
subscribed to the same set of MS public newsgroups using
msnews.microsoft.com. I can read everything just fine but I cannot seem to
post successfully.

My posts (to microsoft.public.test) are not showing up, and my replies to
existing threads are not showing up either (yes, I am using reply to group).
Doesn't matter which of my 20-odd groups I try.

I receive no error messages. The messages show up in my Sent Items.
Arrow/markers indicate that I have replied within a thread, but my reply is not
there.

Interestingly, I was recently told by someone I know that they saw a reply
from me show up in m.p.windows.server.sbs, but that then it was 'deleted' (or
disappeared). I sure did not do it!

I do not know where to turn and I am seriously missing OE right now! Help?

Are you virus scanning out going messages?
WLMail thinks that it has successfully sent the message.

Hi, Noel - thanks for answering. I think I accidentally clicked the option
to set your post as the answer to my question; I am not used to the web
interface. Anyway - no, that option is not enabled. I also deleted the
built-in "community" account in WM anyway. All I have are the two news server
accounts I use - msnews.microsoft.com and connectnews.microsoft.com.

Anything else you can suggest?

Hi, Ron - thanks. No, I do not have a local mail scanner on this workstation.
In fact (shhh) I do not have any local antivirus on this box yet.
Don't worry about it - I do not know of anyone who takes the slightestnotice

Don't worry about it - I do not know of anyone who takes the slightest
notice of those markings.

I think that built-in account /is/ msnews.

Not really, except that another regular MVP poster has reported today that
none of his posts since 22 January made it to msnews until today, even
though they seemed to have been transmitted normally. Try again? Perhaps
there was a gremlin at work with a down on MVPs...

That Communities nonsense in WLMail has been so buggy that most people
turned it off. Because posts have to traverse yet another bunch of servers
to have their bells and whistles attached, it was often the last straw and
a lot of posts went astray.

Get in touch with Gary VanderMolen, Microsoft MVP (Mail). He had the same issue
(everything worked except postings did not show up ) and he was off from posting for
a few days because of it.He solved the problem and maybe it is the same as with you.
Below is a snip from his return post of today.

He posts here in this group and also in windows.vista.mail

Much of what I have posted since January 21st has gone into a black hole.
After running many tests it turns out that only the newsgroups on the NNTP
server msnews.microsoft.com ("Microsoft Communities") are affected.
Posting to newsgroups other than the public Microsoft ones was normal.
After much troubleshooting, the logical conclusion was that my Microsoft
Communities account in Windows Mail was corrupted. Yet all the sent
posts saved to Sent Items, without any error message. Deleting the account
and recreating it did not fix the problem. Tried two other newsreaders,
Agent and Windows Live Mail, same result. Tried both Vista and Windows 7
computers, same result. Posting to the test newsgroups resulted in about a
50% success rate, with no rhyme or reason.

Nothing has changed on my end, but am trying again to see what happens.

I never did figure out what caused my similar problem or what cured it.

I never did figure out what caused my similar problem or what cured it.
All I know is that nearly all of my posts to newsgroups on the=20
msnews.microsoft.com server failed to show up during the period=20
January 22nd through February 1st. Posting became normal again on=20
February 2nd. I tried different newsreader programs, even different=20
computers, but nothing helped. Strangely, about 50% of my posts to test
newsgroups were successful. Try posting to microsoft.public.test and=20
microsoft.public.nntp.test. Try varying your 'From' address and =
signature=20
(if it contains a URL). I wish I had a better handle on this issue, but =
my gut
instinct tells me that this is caused by some obscure bug on the NNTP =
server.

It can be difficult seeing stuff there in any case. ; )
Otherwise do you have any more details which would allow someone
to check on that for you? E.g. newsgroup name and timestamp?

Tip: if you are keeping your posts in Sent Items you could extract that
detail with findstr after navigating to that subdirectory (e.g. copy it
from
the Maintenance dialog Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab, M, F, Y, Ctrl-c and then build
a cd /d command with it (right-click Paste) and append
\Storage Folders\Sent Items ), then issue:

findstr "^Subject: ^From: ^Date: ^Newsgroups:" *.nws

Oh. Are you using a large signature with lots of links in it by any
chance? <eg>
