Problem Using Character Map in Windows Live Mail

Asked By Derek

Thanks to other posts, I have figured out how to copy and paste a symbol from
the Character Map into an email that I am typing (using Windows Live Mail on
new computer running Windows 7) -- not as convenient as it was when using
Outlook / XP on my old computer, but OK. The remaining problem is that the
symbol, for example a letter with an acute accent, appears in 14-point size
in the email that I am typing in 10-point. Does anyone know how to make the
symbol paste into the email in the same size font as the one I am typing in?

In the character map there is a Font drop down box at the top.

In the character map there is a Font drop down box at the top. Try
changing the font there.

Playing around with it, I have found that if Arial is selected there, it
pastes in 14 point. Selecting Times New Roman, or Verdana, and the
character pastes in the message font size. Why I do not know.

In any case, the font matched the message regardless of the character
map setting.

If there are just a few characters that you commonly paste, there is
another method that may be quicker. When you select character in the
character map in the status line you will see a note of "Alt+9999" where
the number varies by character. To enter that character anywhere, just
hold down the ALT key and type the number on the numeric pad (not the
top of of the keyboard).

I use the 3 digits version which is quicker.

As in Mari??tte, the ?? is Alt+137 on the numeric pad.
The ?? in B??atrice is Alt+130, etc.

I have copied all the most used numbers and printed them to fit inside a CD
case, which resides on my desk :-)
I have never found that the accented letter turns out a different size.

Thanks very much. I have now successfully copied an accented letter into an
email, in the correct font and size without the need for adjustment, using
the Alt + number method.

You are welcome :-)

We run a Twinning Society (a village in the UK 'twinned' with a similar
sized village in France, to promote Entente Cordiale) and the
CD-with-Accents has proved very useful.
