Windows 7 - Problems dowloading some Hotmail messages to WLM

Asked By OldieC

I have been using WLM siince I got Vista a few years ago so I could receive
my Hotmail messages to my desktop & have not had problems till recently. Any
mail that is of the chain sort or jokes doing the rounds with the addressess
not deleted are just not downloading so have to go to Hotmail to read them.
A lot are not very large either.

I came to the forum & read there was a new version so have downloaded it.
When I opened it noticed there is no longer a Send/Receive icon so unable to
check for mail in between times. Have clicked on the other icons to see if
anything there. Any help for both queries would be appreciated.

The 'Sync' button has replaced the Send/Receive button.

Thank u Gary but no "sync" button showing. I have new, reply, reply all,
forward,
add to calendar, delete, junk, print, move to, call, send IM, blog.
Further over launch the colorizer, menus & help.

Also notice unless u click on an email most of the buttons are now greyed
out, as well as "subject & the date" in my email messages, making it very
hard to see when looking for a particular message. Is there some way to make
them the same as the "from" like they used to be? Just noticed new mail is
still dark till u open it.

To date must say not liking the updated version.

The Sync button should have been present by default.
Right-click on the toolbar, Customize toolbar, then add the buttons you =
want.

The faded-out fonts are a much disliked 'feature' of the current version =
of
Windows Live Mail. Let Microsoft know how you feel about it:

Some relief can be obtained by creating a message rule like this one:
For all messages
Highlight it with color
Then choose black for the color.

Now have the "sync" button thanks & created the message rule as directed &
coming dark with a new email but greying out again as soon as opened. Not
sure if the directions are supposed to keep the subject dark for good? 1
out of 2 is good though & will pass on my dislike too.

Try this - go to Tools - Options - Read - and change the #seconds on the
first option "Mark messages read after nn seconds".

Went to "tools" etc but a bit confused by the "after nn seconds" as u cannot
use letters. When I understand what u mean, will that leave the messages
under "subjects" still dark like before the update or not

LOLOL !! "nn" is used a lot to represent inputting a number. But you
figured it out - sorry or I'd have been clearer. It will keep them dark up
to that number of seconds that you put in there. "Dark" signifies an
them (including if you use the "preview pane") they will be subject to the
number of seconds you enter. As an example, I use the "preview pane" and
have that option set to 3 seconds. When I first open WLMail or go to the
the list is displayed in the "preview pane" and therefore the dark - turns
grey - in 3 seconds. All of the others still are dark until I select them.
If I click on one of them - they turn to grey within 3 seconds too because
they are displayed in the preview pane (even if I do not actually read them
there).

Sorry, that is the best you can do. That's why I said "some" relief. :-(
Hopefully the next version may be better in this regard.

See this..
Font Color ??? Gray Text of Read Messages in Windows Live Mail 2009
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!953.entry

while it is redundant to what is been already provided,,,it does note that rules apply only to pop3 accounts.

If your Hotmail account is configured as an http account and not pop3 then rules will not apply....thus the gray text or read
messages can not be overridden in XP.

If you decide to use Pop3 for a Hotmail account(Pop became available for all Hotmail accounts in Feb 2009) you will not be able to
take advantage of viewing all the folders present in the Hotmail user interface(mail.live.com) when viewing in WLM.
-m The reason for this difference...Pop3 is not capable of syncing all the folders and content, like Http.

Second, use of the Pop3 protocol only downloads a copy of messages from your Hotmail web account's Inbox(ie. No other web folder).

- Finally, if you wish to retain messages on the server for later viewing in the web UI while using Pop3 in WLM, one must configure
the Hotmail account to leave messages on the server. If this setting is not enabled, the original message residing on the Hotmail
server will be moved to the Hotmail web UI 'Deleted' folder and purged in 5 days.

Thanks for the help. Not sure whether I have the HTTP or the POP3 but will
stick with what I have. Looks like I will have to wait patiently for the
next version & hope it is better. I have sent feedback to Microsoft so hope
lots of other folk do too. Would go back to the version I had before if I
could. This version is awful.

If you go to Tools - Accounts - select that account, Properties - and look
on the Servers tab, it will say in the first line if it is POP3 or HTTP.
Maybe then all of this info that is been provided will be clearer for you.
