Windows 7 - Hotmail to Live Mail
Asked By Brian

I am on Windows 7 and IE 8. I have a hotmail account, but cannot switch over
to the Live View. Live View Mail opens when I use PICASA, but I can find
nowhere in the hotmail options or IE toolbar to configure the Windows Live
Mail as the defult email window.

On Windows 7, options for setting program defaults can be found in the Control Panel or the Start Menu.
Hotmail's web UI does not have an option to set any program on a local machine as Default.
Windows Live Mail is a desktop email client that can access pop3, IMAP, and http accounts.
Hotmail accounts(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com) can be accessed in Windows Live Mail using either Pop3 or Http.
Setting up a Hotmail account in WLM will default to the Http setting(using the DeltaSync server)
- To setup using Pop3, it must be done manually, see this for the settings:
Hotmail and MSN Accounts POP3/SMTP Access

Sorry, I do not use Picasa thus cannot offer any information on that front.
Nor am I sure what you mean by 'Live View' and 'Live View Mail'

Winston is incorrect in his statement that Hotmail web UI does not have
an option to set any program on a local machine as default. I can
surely do it with mine and have at times in the past... Instructions for
how to do it can be found at:

That article does not refute Winston's statement. It merely shows how to
download your Hotmail via POP or IMAP thru a third party service.

You seem to be confusing the ability to make a change in Vista's
default mail service setting with what ...winston said (not being able
to make that change from within Windows Live Hotmail).

Your link did not take me to the right place for doing the former.
This one does:

I am not certain if it works on Windows 7 as well as Vista.

You need to go back and read the article and instructions again, Dave.
It does not show what you claim, it shows how to make Hotmail your
default mail program in Vista (still opening in a browser). You are
mistaken.

Having difficulty ? Is it 1 and/or 2 ?
1. Reading ?
- "Hotmail web UI does not have an option to set any program on a local machine as default"
Please, point us to a location in the Hotmail user interface that provides that option.
2. Posting a link ?
- try again...Heinz did cover 'How to make Hotmail your default email client', but not on that link.
Save this one for future reference(Vista not Win7) and see #1 above(still no option to do it in the Hotmail web UI)
http://email.about.com/cs/hotmailtips/qt/et032401.htm
And finally, do note the op is using Win7 and IE8. Heinz's subsequent instructions on the above link if using IE7 on Vista are not
correct. There is no option to choose an email client on a Vista/IE7's Programs tab(nor is there in IE8 in Win7). :p

Agreed, and after testing my alternate link:

it pains me to say that the included utility will only run on Vista.=20

Ok guys.. you got me. The link I provided was for IE8 on Vista (and it
does work there), but you were referring to Win7. Sorry about that.
But, just for those using Vista and IE8, that link does work. The proof
is in my screenshot below:

In your first post, you state:
| Winston is incorrect in his statement that Hotmail web UI does not have
| an option to set any program on a local machine as default.
Now you post a link to a screen shot, not of the Windows Live Hotmail UI,
but a local, Windows Explorer UI, for selecting the default applications
used in the OS.
I have seen both MSN Hotmail (now Windows Live Hotmail), and Yahoo! Mail
offered in the "Set Program Defaults" of Windows XP. I have seen neither, as
well, in Windows Vista. I believe there is some kind of utility which must
be downloaded from either the Windows Live sites (for Hotmail), or the
Yahoo! sites (for Yahoo! Mail) in order to add the options under any Windows
OS, XP, Vista, or 7. But the option is not available from the "Hotmail UI".

Keep trying...though I doubt you will ever be able to prove that Hotmail web UI has an option in any browser(IE7, 8 or the future,
XP, Vista, Win7) to set itself as the default email program!!! It does not exist.
Your referenced screenshot shows the Windows GUI, not the Hotmail web UI.
Go to Hotmail.com, logon with your Live ID...then compare Hotmail's web UI with the Windows GUI...
If you do not have a Live ID capable of accessing Hotmail, then it quite obvious from where you pulled your earlier statement...
If you do have a Live ID capable of accessing Hotmail...it?s a mystery that you have not discovered the difference between the
Windows GUI and the Hotmail web UI.
