Windows 7 - importing addresses

Asked By Tim Mathews on 15-Jul-12 05:58 AM
I am totally new to Live Mail having been a Mac person for several years.
Using the address book has been really frustrating...for example, in any
given listing, let us say for whatever reason, the contact's work and home
email addresses are reversed. Is there a way to simply change the "Home"
and "Work" headings? My only workaround solution was to cut the home,
paste it into notes, cut work and paste it to home and then go to the notes
and cut the former home and paste it where it should be. I do not know what
went wrong when my contacts were intitially added to the Windows Live
Address book but there are many (over one hundred) which have various
mistakes of the nature I have described...home information is actually work
and vice versa and I'd sure like a quicker way to fix it if possible.

Thinking I had a brainstorm, I thought I'd just import from Gmail but for
whatever reason, the import appears to have taken place but nothing has been
added. To verify my actions: I open Gmail, go to contacts, save as a csv
file named contacts.csv and then select that file when prompted by Windows
Live what file to import. After clicking it and accepting the mapping, the
screen prompted that the import had begun but even after waiting an hour
(there are several hundred contacts) to make sure I was allowing sufficient
time, nothing had changed. To double check that the file actually existed
WITH content, I used Excel to open the csv file and all the names, addresses
etc were there.

So, I am at a loss to figure out how to accomplish my goal without manually
spending two or three minutes per contact which because of the large number,
would really be time consuming. One final tidbit, I have both an iPhone and
Android each with the full and correct contact list so if there is a
methodology for transferring them to the Windows Live address book, that
would also solve my problem.

Sorry for the length but I wanted to make sure I fully explained that I had
TRIED to solve the problem before coming here on bended knee! ;-)

Any help?

Unfortunately WLM does not provide a method of flipping email address =
data=20
from a given field to another. The available email address fields in a =
given=20
contact (in WLM) are personal, work, other.

With respect to importing (and exporting) contacts. WLM's csv import =
engine=20
is only capable of importing or exporting one single email address field =
per=20
contact.

The only options to import contact data into WLM are via:
- Csv, Wab (Outlook Express format), vcf, and current Windows address =
book=20
(Windows Users\Contacts). You can discount wab since OE is not an option =

when going from a mac to Win7/Vista.

Importing your csv data into Windows user contacts then into WLM via =
current=20
Windows address book may provide some relief, though any success would =
be=20
dependent upon how the data is arranged in your csv file (headers, rows=20
etc).

Sorry to be obtuse, but you can do what you ask in Gmail. Why bother
with Windows Live Mail.
Dave Willcox replied to Magnus on 15-Jul-12 04:24 PM
Because he wants all his addresses on his desktop not somewhere on
google's servers.  Is that ok?

Huh? Who appointed you as the OP's spokesperson? Do you want to quote
where the OP stated that?

If the preferred email client is WL Mail 2011 (on Win7 or Vista based on =
his=20
posting properties) then it would stand to reason the op wants them =
locally=20
on his machine and optionally also in the cloud (contacts.live.com).
- The latter, if not obtaining or creating a new Hotmail type account,=20
(hotmail, live, or msn.com) would necessitate registering the Gmail =
address=20
as a third party Live ID.

Registering the GMail account as a Live ID may provide some import =
benefits=20
(data in the correct field), since the import engine in the Live service =

(Contacts.live.com) is more full featured than the import engine in WLM.
- Contacts.live.com > Manage > Import > Choose Gmail then enter the=20
necessary info to import

Once done, the GMail Live ID would be used to sign on to Live services =
to=20
ensure the cloud data is migrated and sync'ed locally in to WLM.

I do not "do" webmail as such. I download all my mail using programs like
Windows world, with Mozilla having announced that they will stop development
on T-bird, it is death seems not too far away so, I am trying what I am
assuming is the replacement for Outlook Express as I really do not like
Outlook. Bottom line, I want my mail on my computer. ;-)
