Connecting to other IM networks

Asked By Adam Badura
31-Jan-10 07:33 AM
Is it possible to connect from Windows Live Messenger (my version is
14.0.8089.726) to other IM networks like ICQ for example? Are there any
plug-ins for that? Is it at least possible to write such plug-in?

Adam Badura

No, it is not.

No, it is not. For the most part, if you want to connect to multiple IM
networks, you need to use another IM client. You can, allegedly, use
Windows Live Messenger with the Yahoo IM service.

The charts here might help you:

Adam Badura,
1. Live Messenger will allow you to "text" with Yahoo Messenger users. You
will not have voice or video features.
2. AOL Messenger will work with ICQ, since AOL bought them a few years back.
I do not know if the voice and video features can be used though.

Greetings Adam,

There is been attempts to do this in the past with moderate degrees of success. However, one
major issue with doing this is that it ends up being a "hack" and therefore can stop working
at any time. For instance, Messenger Discovery has Facebook Chat support, although it was not
working last time I tried (I am not really in a position to try at the moment).

In general, there are some great multi-messenger clients (as already mentioned), and a lot do
OSCAR (AIM/ICQ), Yahoo and others well, but Messenger support is really lacking in basically
all of them. It really shows more recently after the forced upgrade to 2009 last year, as a
lot of these clients do not support the latest version (or support it fully) of the Messenger
protocol.
