Windows 7 - Windows Live Photo Gallery

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Ultimate and am a bit dissaponted that Windows Live
Photo Gallery is installed not as an upgrade to Vista Photo Gallery but
alongside Vista Photo Gallery. In a nother directory.
Leaving me with 2 startmenu entries for similair applications.

Please think about integrating Windows Live Photo Gallery with Vista more.
I understand that not every Vista version comes with Photo Gallery but
Ultimate does and I didn't pay so much to get such poor integration. Did I?

Hi -

I don't know what Microsoft's plans are as far as replacing Vista Photo
Gallery but I think WLPG still being a beta product; it may not be a

Poor integration? Who downloaded WLPG? You, right? So how is this poor
integration? For every person that wants it removed there will be at least
2 that would complain something was removed and they didn't like it because
they paid for it. Companies can't make everyone happy. Don't me wrong,
there are plenty that don't care whether make anyone happy. I am sure
there is a way to remove VPG. If not, suggest it. There are plenty of
places in Windows Live to send feedback which is what I do if there is
something I don't like or want changed or done differently.

Hi Brian,

you act as if I personaly attack you:) Seems a bit overdone, right?
It's not that weird to expect Windows Live Photo Gallery to be a replacement
to Vista Photo Gallery. With Messenger it works the same:)
I installed Windows Live Messenger and the Messenger I installed from the
Vista opening folder is replaced!
If one doesn't want it removed, one shouldn't install beta software!

Anyway, who here read anywhere this is just a beta issue? Where does it
state that in the end Windows Live Photo Gallery is an upgrade/update to
Vista Photo Gallery?

To get to your tip on feedback.... I was under the impression this newsgroup
is a fine place to post feedback. If you have a better way of giving
feedback, I'm very interested.

I too have Vista Ultimate and have searched but have yet to find a
concurrent installation, all I have is WLPG and it specifically states it is
a beta.

Patrick, this is a legitimate question. I am not sure what the team intends at
final release. It may replace the original or it may simply put it aside as it
does now. You can still launch the original, but the beta is associated with all
actions formerly launching the original.
The newsgroup is a good place for feedback and so is this link:

Whatever the installation does with Windows Photo Gallery is a mystery to me,
but it is still there. If you right click an image file and select Open With,
Windows Photo Gallery is still there, though it will only open if you select the
option to change the default program to open that file with.
So, Windows Photo Gallery is hidden away - no shortcut and it doesn't appear
when searching from the orb, but it is there.

Hmmm.... mine is exactly like EliteKat said.. When I right click a photo,
there is only WLPG along with other 3rd party apps... and I cannot find the
original either.

Select "Open With", Art. And the "Select Default Program". Use the Open icon on
the Vista Explorer toolbar when a jpg is selected.

Found it! and now that I did it is listed again not only in the right click
menu but back in my programs folder. now how strange is that.

Pretty odd, eh?
Mine isn't back in the Programs list on Vista, even after opening an image with
the built-in program and it still doesn't show up when I use the search box, but
it's there for the context menu. Perhaps if I were to make it the default
program it would appear.

(Sorry to revive a two week old thread...)

I have complained (loudly) on MVP calls and such that Windows Live is really
looking like they are operating as a completely independent company. It's
like you guys have no respect for the Vista folks at all. Vista is not even
a year old yet and you're already rewriting/renaming the OS's photo gallery
instead of simply releasing a newer version of it and replacing the
original. You also did that with the mail client. It's extremely frustrating
to have to constantly defend Microsoft's lack of a cohesive vision vs. Apple
fans. It may not seem like a big deal but it is. This undermining of the OS
guys is just going to confuse and frustrate users like Patrick and myself
who have two start menu items for photo viewers.

Update: My (pinned) start menu item doesn't work after installing Windows
Live Photo Gallery. It says that the shortcut may have been removed. So I
don't know whether this is good (because Windows Live obviously removed the
original shortcut to avoid the confusion) or bad (because an average user
would still be weirded out by that).

Either way, it'd be nice if when this is released it is just a Windows
Update that replaces the Vista Photo Gallery binaries and isn't called

On Vista, I would tend to agree with you. I do think it causes confusion that
the product is an update, but it gets renamed. Pinned start menu shortcuts,
though, are regularly rendered inoperable by even normal updates.

I, on the other hand, don't have an issue with Windows Live programs
replacing and renaming Vista features. I see Vista as a platform that offers
a lot of productivity. Windows Live is really an enhancement of some of
those features presented on an ala carte basis. I can take Live Mail in
place of the regular Mail or not. Same with Photo Gallery. Same with
Messenger. Thus far the Live versions of the each of the Vista features has
been superior as far as I am concerned (though I did need to tweak Live
Photo Gallery to get rid of the yellow/green tint, something I never needed
to do with the Vista version). I am not the least concerned with what Apple
fans think about Vista because they will never like it regardless of how
good it is or what it does or doesn't do better than OS X. The model we are
seeing with Live providing enhanced services to the platform of Vista seems
to be the direction that Ray Ozzie has been talking about for some time as
the future of operating systems. For me, so far, it works.

I do agree with Josh that it's very poor of Microsoft not to feature-upgrade
the included software packages that comes with Windows (Vista).

Windows Photo Gallery does not deserve the title "Live" in it's current
incarnation. Logging into Windows Live ID just because I want to watch
photos on my local machine sounds a bit scary...

When that is said, the Live version of Photo Gallery have removed features
that was in the original release (for instance view by rating).

On the same note, Windows Live Mail didn't replace Windows Mail. There is a
whole deal of product and source forking going on at the moment which only
helps to confuse the consumers. Will Windows Mail, Windows Calendar, Windows
Contacts and Windows Photo Gallery be patched/upgraded in the future, or are
they already outdated products?

Take for instance Windows Contacts and Windows Live Contacts, while Windows
Contacts is integrated into the OS, Windows Live Contacts has it's own GUI.
And what is worse, is that some third party applications integrates with
Windows Contacts, while others into the Windows Live Contacts. Aaagh....

I'm waiting for Windows Live Calendar (beta) to "replace" Windows
Calendar... does anyone know if this is a product that is planned?

You don't have to log into Windows Live ID to watch the photos/videos on
your computer. The only time when logging in to Windows Live ID is needed is
when you wish to publish to Live Spaces or Soapbox. If you have not done so
already you will be asked to do so when you click on those menu items under
publish.

Look at the term "Live" as in it has possibilities to connect to other
that MSN Video which it is integrated with now....).

Calendar is still in dogfood (Microsoft Employees only...look at that as a
alpha version...or even pre-alpha) so not much to tell about that.
