Security related query

Asked By Pankaj

Hi,

I have been testing Live sync for my personal data but I wonder how secure
is my data while in the Air.

1. Is the data encrypted?
- Ans: Yes, I guess I have an option to encrypt the data.

1.1 What encryption algorithm is used? In other words, how strong is the
algorithm.

2. How secure is the port used by sync? In other words, are the
participating workstations vulnerable to hacker attacks even if they have an
anti-virus and/or firewall installed.

Not just an option, it is encrypted.

Not just an option, it is encrypted. The following is from Live Sync Help here:
http://help.live.com/Help.aspx?market=en-US&project=WL_Sync&querytype=topic&query=WL_FolderShare_CONC_AboutSync.htm
Sync is a peer-to-peer network (Two or more computers that share a direct
connection.) with security features. Only you and people that you invite can
view or access files in your synchronized folders. To help increase privacy,
Sync encrypts all files exchanged over the network using AES (Advanced
encryption standard. An algorithm used for securing data transferred over the
Internet.) and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer. An encryption format that helps keep
information secure while it is sent across the Internet.) , and authenticates
files using RSA (A cryptographic technology that is the industry standard for
high-quality encryption, especially for data sent over the Internet. The acronym
stands for Rivest, Shamir, and Adelman, the inventors of the technique.) .

As secure as any other port with a listening app behind it. Live Sync
communicates to the Live Sync service. If two PCs are online and connected to
the service, Live Sync can communicate P2P. Without the proper authentication,
traffic will be refused.

Do you believe that the configuration option under the Settings/General

Do you believe that the configuration option under the Settings/General tab
that claims to enable or disable encryption is just a dummy and a tease?
