XP Media Center & IE8

I have a website I need to use that is not compatible with IE8.

IE8 installed with an update, and would not uninstall.  It was not listed in
the add/remove programs, nor was there an IE8 folder on the system.

We did a repair install of Media Center (sp2) and can get back online.  IE
is now IE6, but I cannot get SP3 to install, and going to IE7 installs, but
does not display a webpage.

The SP3 install fails with the "An error has occured in updateing your
system" message.  Searching revealed my Installer may be corrupt, so we
reinstalled that from the MS download site, rebooted, and still get the same
message when trying to install SP3.

HELP!!!

Any insight is appreciated, thanks in advance.

win98 to 2000 is IE5

IE8 automatically installed, and the people who maintain the needed

have not caught up, and we found out the hard way.   We could not uninstall
IE8, so the repair install with a legal CD brought us back to XP MC SP2 and
IE6.  Now we cannot come forward.

Unsure about the rest of your comments, they do not seem to apply to my
situation.  I am curious about the installer issue (it did not resolve my
problem) and what else could possibly be an issue.

OK, maybe there are only a dozen or so browsers available, but one friend
likes Chrome better than IE8, and I like Firefox, and there are Safari,
Opera, and more.

IE was background for my issue...I cannot update to SP3.

I have repaired the installer, and tried again.  Same issue.

Trying another browser may reslove the website problem, but I am curious
about the SP3 update.  Everything else should, and I use that word
cautiously, should fall into place when I can get SP3 installed.

In your first post you refer to XP XP(Media Center) SP2 and later you refer
to SP SP2 and to XP SP3,  Is it correct to assume that in your first most
you did not mean to refer to the Media Center SP?
Under OS properties what actual release number of XP does it say you are
running?
Have you tried running Check Disk to fix any possible file corruption?

setup image and create a CD?

Does SP3 still show up in Add/Remove Programs and, if so, what happens whey
you try to uninstall?

Did you attempt to fix the Installer for SP2 or SP3?

When you attempted to fix the installer, did you first disable the current
Installer before attempting to replace it?

If not -- in Services, change Windows Installer to Manual startup type (and
stop if running). Then open regedit and locate and delete the subkey:

You probably have found a solution by now.

You probably have found a solution by now.  However,  I will post this
information anyway.

You can revert back to Internet Explorer 7 from Internet Explorer 8 by
uninstalling IE8 from the "Installed Updates."  This procedure will cause
IE8 to revert back to your prior version of IE..  To accomplish this,
navigate to:

1.  Updates
2.  View Updates History
3.  Installed Updates
4.  from here I searched for IE 8, Uninstalled then restarted my computer.

This may be a long way, but it was my way of doing it.

The "Compatibility View" in IE8 was designed for older websites?  You can
also download IE 7 for XP here:
