Windows 7 - Windows Media 11 not playing DVDs

Asked By OkeDoke123

I have Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 and am running Windows Media
Player 11.0.6001.7000. I have several DVDs that run fine on it including the
Band of Brothers miniseries and other movies.

I just purchased several new DVD movies (300, WALL-E, Star Wars Clone Wars).
None will run on it. I get a screen of pixellated colors, no error messages.

The DVDs will run fine on VLC Media Player , a freeware media player.

Any ideas?

If I use Media Center or Media Player now the Video and sound gallops or
skips.
POWERDVD by CyberLink works OK.
CD's play OK in all three APPS.
I just installed Media Player 11. It did not fix anything.
I have looked at all Options / Settings and have not found anything to make
it better.
I looks like a buffer or timing problem; maybe caused by a Microsoft Update
that I shouldnt have applied.
I appreciate any suggestions

Looks like MS needs to hire a consultant programmer from VLC or CyberLink.
I don't like to add another application to do what the Windows APP should do.
Is it too much to ask that what I paid for should work and be supported?

What are the results under WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information
menu tool under "MPEG Filters"?

Usually this breaks down because other tools stomp on WMP's decoders. It
can be hard and/or bad to prevent things from stomping on other things like
that. =\

Here are the results you asked for. I am not a techie and have absolutely no
idea what this means. I do agree with PUDDLER - it would be nice for a
Windows App to work like it is supposed to.

Hm, so you've installed three different sets of codecs that stomp on the
Windows App's settings and made it not work like it was supposed to. Any
reason for doing that? What installed the large variety of MPEG filters you
list below?

I'd bet that if you just had the Microsoft MPEG filters installed, which is
how the system should work before it's touched, this would work just right.
I believe the Ligos filters in particular below might cause problems, but
the key thing is that your machine has overwritten the default DVD/MPEG
filters. This is very much related to why this wouldn't work.

One way for this to keep "working like it is supposed to" is to disallow you
from installing random or bad software on the computer, but that wouldn't
make anyone happy. =)

I'd suggest figuring out which set of filters is bad and then complaining to
whomever installed those to your system. If vendors don't ship software
that doesn't work, this would be much less likely to break. =)

Could I just get a WMP Update and when WMP stomped on the APP that stomped on
WMP I would know the culpret.
Hay! I did; It was WMP 11 that was installed last and WMP 11 didn't fix the
problem. Do I need to get the correct MPEG filter from MS? Doesn't it come
with WMP 11?

No, none of those third party MPEG components have ever been installed by
any version of Windows Media Player whatosever.

The Windows Media Player installer does not and should not know about the
MPEG filters installed to your system, and should not be in the business of
attempting to guess if you have installed Good or Bad filters or codecs.

The correct Microsoft MPEG filter is already installed to Oke's system -
it's the one marked "Microsoft" in that list.

This has been a "problem" (feature, really) since day one: you've always
been able to install your own MPEG filters that overrode the Microsoft ones.
That's what has happened here. Because Windows Media Player isn't in the
business of micro-managing your filters, there's nothing you can do within
the player to handle this.

It is a good idea to think about what multimedia software you install to
your system and not install random codecs/filters.

How do I check my system and get that list
I am getting lost in these postings.
