MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)/ Windows Defender updates

My problem is that I wish to install MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
but it fails every time, and I want to ignore any Windows Defender updates as
I do not have Windows Defender on my system. How can I 'simply' achieve this?
I have tried to follow the threads but the 'solutions' seem to be written
for people with a degree in Computing. Why can't Microsoft get these updates
to install, if they are so important?

I fixed my problem:
1. Stopped Panda Platinium 2006 Internet Security (Antivirus)
2. Installed KB927978
3. restarted the computer
4. Restarted Panda

It worked !!

unless you can explain why many of us cannot update MSXML. Secondly you have
missed the point completely, regarding Defender. Of course I want to
automatically obtain all downloads that I wish to receive on my machine, but
in the case of Defender, I do not have it on my system so why should I
require updates?

and tried to download and install. It did not work. I have Spyware Blaster,
Anti-Phishing etc. Could they be stopping it?

I am now totally bewildered!! I have done what you suggested and removed the
files ( though only those in System32, There were some in WinSxS/86?) Went to
Microsoft updates and MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978), now does not
show, but they are still trying to update Windows Defender Definition Update
1.14.1843.4 for Windows Defender (KB915597). Though it says that the file is
0Kb. What is this nonsense and what are the implications of following your
advice? Why is MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) not now open to
download and why did I need it in the first place?

I really have no idea what msxml4 does. I had the same problem and responded
with what Microsoft suggets. You removed XML4 and therefor doesn't need
security updates.
If there is a program that asks for it in the future, you can download it
here:

As for your Windows defender, maybe you installed LiveOne Care?
