There are many reasons why updates fail to install that's why I'm going to ask you to
provide further information -
On the WU Website, select your history of updates – now click on failed update (red mark)
and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a search
for the error code.
or
How to view the Update log in Windows:-
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.
Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.
Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

Sorry, I can't help, but wish someone else could :-)
I just made an upgrade from Win 2000 Pro sp4, to XP pro sp2.
Everything else (applications etc) works ok, but I got the same problem:
Windows Update finds(* 70+ updates, but it can't install them.
If I download some of the updates manually from MS site, they do install
nicely anyway.
*) Before this, I got an error 0x80245003, that I fixed with this:
http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=10651
Jus hope this fix didn't lead into this new problem?
I still have a copy of the old disk available, so it's easy to return to
original state and start over. Actually, I've already gone thru this twice..
so it's not just a coincidence.
Regards,
Timo

Hi Timo, please start your own thread. That way, the OP thread doesn't get mixed up with
your thread as the problems could be unrelated.

You're having the same problem I'm having -- exactly the same. Which means,
it's likely NOT a problem we've created. Rather, it's a Microsoft problem.
Pardon my bitterness but forciing users to prarade through a bunch of
geek-talk isn't the way Microsfoft should be acting.
Oh well!

This worked!
Not only did the collected patches load, 10 'non-critical' patches showed up
that I hadn't seen before including one for my HP printer.
Many many Thanks!

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why? If you use both XP and 7, do you ever plan on ditching XP for good?
