Same non-install, error code 0x643. Tried to delete downloaded from
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download, did not help.
Probably we have to uninstall something (service pack 1 or the whole 1.1),
reinstall.
Or we will have a better update-pack.
Who knows?

Same problem. It must be wide. Microsoft must come up with a solution
to it. I had same problem with .NET framwork 1.1 SP1 and I had to wipe
all the .NET with clean up tool which I got from support and than reinstall
all again.

from .net framework and should reinsert original disk containig the 1.1 .net

Here is EXACTLY what you do to solve this problem for Windows XP 32
bit. If you happen to have a rarer 64 bit version, server OS, or
SOMETHING else follow the same general instructions but get the
version of the files appropriate for your system but first, Microsoft
has pissed me off beyond belief. I looked in my log and this same
thing happened 6/2006...thanks MSFT for torturing us again this year.
I thought it was a familiar feeling...nice branding...this is a huge
humiliation for their .NET team in my opinion or perhaps we should
start calling them the .NOT team...anyway....

Steps:
1) Go to the control panel and select the add/remove software tool
then TRY and remove everything with .NET in the name. If you can
remove everything go to step 3. If you cannot remove everything go to
step 2.

2) Go and download the windows installer clean up tool at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

run the windows installer clean up tool and BE CAREFUL to only select
the .NET items from the list and remove them. Note: this will likely
leave the names as "dead links" in the Add/Remove Software list
(ahhh ...Microsoft thoroughness at its best) but not to worry they
will do no harm and will get fixed when we finish. It's possible to
clean them up but let's stay out of the registry :-)

3) Go and get the file "dotnetfx.exe" this is ".NET 1.1" from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

install it.

4) Go and get the file "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe" this is the ".NET
1.1 service pack 1" from: my personal website (JUST KIDDING,
RELAX...get everything of course from a microsoft.com domain)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

install it.

5) Install the SECURITY patch, the dreaded KB928366, we have all grown
to hate. You can install it from the Windows Update program (be sure
to ONLY select the KB928366 patch and NOTHING else, we dont want to
put back 2.0 or 3.0 yet). It's OK go ahead and click ...it will be
alright...you can do it...it's just one more time... :-)

6) Re-run the Windows Update and you can add back in .NET 2.0 and 3.0

7) Post to thank me...

Now WHY hasn't Microsoft posted instructions yet? .... What is UP?!

Good night!

Hello!

Any particular reason why it would not be a good idea to
uninstall .net 1.1 and .net 2.0 and then install .net 3.0 which does
not need any service patch?

Thanks,

I was also having the same problem with Windows Update. Tried
everything from completely uninstalling 1.1 to editing the registry,
etc. What a waste of time.
Finally realized that maybe Windows Update was the problem.
Here is what I did that worked! I run Win2k pro.
First I turned off all virus, spyware and firewalls programs!!
Then I downloaded, saved to my computer and reinstalled NetFramework
1.1 (dotnetfx.exe)
Next I downloaded, saved to my computer and reinstalled NetFramework
1.1 SP patch (NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe)
Next I downloaded, saved to my computer and installed Netframework 1.1
security update KB928366....the one that kept failing... (NDP1.1sp1-
KB928366-X86.exe)
Rebooted, let Windows update do its thing and BINGO all is well.
Somehow, trying to perform this update from the Microsoft servers just
wouldn't work, but if I save all to my harddrive and turned everything
off, it updated without any problems.
Good luck.

I too have had many attempted installations of this update.

I finally downloaded the update and tried update directly with nojoy BUT got
details indicating the update was searching for netfx.msi (in default windows
document folder location for the administrator account).

I found the original dotfx.exe.. extracted the netfx.msi.. put that into
folder with the KB928366 update (NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe) and it installed
(FINALLY !!)

I then had to reboot (due to the continuing explorer lockup) and the auto
install for this update showed up. So I clicked on the update shield and it
now installed (re-installed) sucessfully as well. and NO FURTHER Update
Notices.

SOMETHING about needing the netfx.msi in the same folder as the update
worked here anyways.

No you're not missing anything. Microsoft is. The screwed up and know it.

As I painfully learned today, this is a common problem. Free Microsoft
security support has been swamped with phone calls at 866-727-2338.
Fortunately they're being very nice about it and walk you through the steps
to overcome the installation problems for the ,Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0 security
updates issued July 10, 2007. The bizarre nature of this is that tech
support told me that these updates work fine if you do not already have .net
framework 1.1 or .net framework 2.0 installed -- heck, why would you update
them if you don't have them already installed? Such is the joy of dealing
with tech support overseas at 2 a.m. their time.

Also you need to keep the 3 versions of .net framework on your computer
(1.1, 2.0, and 3.0) -- they are not cumulative. Different applications
require different versions of .net framework to function.

I'll try to repeat their step by step instructions so you don't have to
call. It worked fine on my Windows XP Pro, SP2 computer; it did not work on
my wife' similar computer.

Read through them first before you do anything -- especially the caution at
the end.

The steps from Microsoft Security Tech Support and from Aaron Stebner's
Weblog at upnet.notlong.com -- Microsoft Tech Support actually took me there
first.

(1) Try to perform a standard uninstall of the .net framework for which you
could not install the July 10 security update. Of course, you do this in the
Control Panel's Add-Remove Programs.

(2) If this fails to completely remove the .net framework you've targeted,
then you'll want to download the tool from Stebner's Weblog -- this is the
tool that Microsoft Tech Support uses and recommends. The file name is
dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip . Unzip the file and run it. You will get to choose
which versions (1.0, 1.1, 2.0) of .net framework you want to uninstall and
clean up. While Mr. Stebner warns against simply uninstalling the .net
frameworks, Microsoft Tech Support had me run this tool without first
attempting the standard uninstall. On my computer this worked just fine.

Stebner warns:
There are a couple of very important caveats that you should read before
using this tool to cleanup .NET Framework bits on your machine:
1. You should try to perform a standard uninstall first. This tool is not
designed as a replacement for uninstall, but rather as a last resort for
cases where uninstall or repair did not succeed for unusual reasons.
2. This cleanup tool will delete shared files and registry keys used by
other versions of the .NET Framework. So if you use it, be prepared to repair
or reinstall any other versions of the .NET Framework that are on your
computer to get them to work correctly afterwards

Download the tool completely uninstall .net frameworks 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0.

(3) Reboot your computer after uninstalling/cleaning up the .net frameworks
you want to remove. NOte that when you restart your computer, any application
that is dependent on a .net framework version that you uninstalled will not
work. Be patient -- they'll work once you've reinstalled the appropriate .net
framework(s).

(4) Run Windows Update - custom. It should show all of the .net frameworks
not currently installed on your computer. Now you have probably not worried
about .net framework 3.0 since there was no security update for it. But there
is a regular update for it. You will probably find these .net frameworks
under "High Priority," but more likely under "Software, Optional." You can
download ALL of the .net frameworks and updates that are visible to you here
-- 1.1, 2.0, 3.0.

(5) After they've installed, reboot your computer.

(6) Now, the .net framework 1.1 that you just installed includes the latest
security update (Microsoft made this change today, July 12, 2007). You should
NOT try to install that update. So you should go back to Microsoft Update,
choose custom, and if it shows the .net framework 1.1 security pack update
tell Microsoft Update not to show it any more. Apparently Microsoft Update
thinks you didn't install it because it was built into the 1.1 that you just
installed.

(7) If you uninstalled .net framework 2.0, you should have been able to
reinstall it via Microsoft update. If it did not show up in Microsoft update,
you can track it down online via a search engine or at Microsoft.com and
download it and install it manually.

CAUTION. Frankly, you would be most prudent to clone your hard drive before
running these updates -- just to give yourself some protection. On my wife's
Windows XP Pro, SP2 computer, the .net framework 1.1 reinstall did not take
and I could not install it because I started getting Runtime errors from the
Microsoft Visual C++ RunTime Library. So I had to revert to a clone after
copying all the data (the D partition) to the clone's D partition.

I have this problem as well. Currently its occuring on a live
production server. Most of the suggested fixes is to "uninstall
asp.net" and "reinstall". These are simple not viable options for me.
In addition, I need asp.net 1.1 as well asp.net 2.0 operational on the
server at all times.

Why doesn't someone from Microsoft fire the person that created the
problem and get this fixed?

withdraw it, they (BILLY) sees fit just to let everyone continue with JUNK
rather than just fix the dam thing. It becomes much more obvious here about,
that so many Window users have had enough and are making the switch to MAC

I had a reoffer problem with this update on an XP system. After

----------------

This is an old bug showing up again. Although the official solution
involves reinstalling the framework after manipulating the registry
with the
installer cleanup tool, there's a much simpler way to fix this:

1. Instead of using Windows Update, download the KB928366 package
from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=281FB2CD-C715-4F05-A01F-0455D2D9EBFB&displaylang=en
Do not install yet.

2. Download the .Net framework 1.1 redistributable package from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3

3. Use Winzip or a similar utility to unpack dotnetfx.exe in a
folder of
your choice. You should get the following files:
netfx.msi
install.exe
InstMsi.exe
InstMsiW.exe
netfx1.cab

4. Launch the KB928366 installer. It will soon complain that it can
find the
installation CD-ROM (don't ask me why). Browse to the folder where
you
unpacked the dotnetfx files.

That's it.

This procedure can be applied to any similar situation regarding
.Net
framework updates. I'm using it since years (that is, since this
Windows
Update bug exists).

Good luck.

I tried those instructions, but the KB928366 installer never asks me for a

My problem, however, is not that KB928366 does not install, but that even if
it installs, the Windows Update continue to ask me to install it, as it
would not be installed at all.

Any idea why?

Have you tried the instructions given here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/

Basically, it involves un-installing .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack
1 in Add/Remove Programs.

Then download (a link is on the above page) and use the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility, and remove all references to .NET Framework Version 1.1
Service pack 1 (only!). (A shortcut to the utility will be place in your
Start
Menu).

Then reinstall .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack 1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en&displaylang=en

Then run Windows Update again, to install KB929729.

I now have 83 downloads and same amount of "Install Failures" for Microsoft's KB928366 along with 25 plus online unanswered inquiries to microsoft.com, all of which I've never encountered such an upfront sign of total failure from Gate's Micrsoft.com

If you EVER find a FIX for this MS Mess please let me know of solution procedure.

Meanwhile, I don't think a fix is forthcomng from this now sinking ship-MS. So am spending too much considerable time to NEVER AGAIN be abandoned by another OS Giant run by a an non-operative customer support team. I believe Apple's MAC appears to be a considerable alternative in favor of available. I now search to both learn about new to me MAC OS.

And of course a good deal on new investment. ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED.

Sincerely,

Eugene H Brown

Try this. It was posted here in July.

1.1 service pack 1"

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

I had the same issue but I found the cause, and a non-destructive fix.

.NET, SQL 2005, Visual Studio, MSXML and many other packages that use
Windows Installer tend to drop MSI and MSP files in C:\Windows\Installer.

Updates to such packages often seek the original files in this folder.
The .NET patch q928366 is one such update.

But these files can be rather large and you can end up with a lot of them,
and if the C: drive gets full, some people identify this folder as using a
lot of space and figure that .MSI and .MSP files are not required for any
existing software to run, so they are safe to delete...

On my server, the MSP & MSI files had been moved to another drive, and if
you hover the mouse over them or right-click and select properties, summary,
it tells you what each was for.

I just copied all the MSI and MSP files that identified themselves as
relating to .NET back to C:\Windows\Installer and reran the patch, and it
worked, no problems.

.... I've been trying to fix this thing on and off for months now. I followed
Sam-R's steps to the letter but to no avail. But along with his information
and many others I accidentally stumbled into the same fix, for my situation,
of two boxes; one win2k Pro and the other XP Pro. This is what my most recent
approach has been (I've lost all procedural concepts along the way with this
thing) :

.... The same as Sam-R has done, go into ADD/REMOVE and remove any and all
traces of anything that has (.NET) in it IF you can.

.... Go to WINDOWS INSTALL CLEANUP and remove anything that has (.NET
FRAMEWORK) also.

.... Download and run dotnetfx.exe
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en)
and when it asks if you want to install NET FRAMEWORKS say yes and let it
install.

....You may also need to download "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe"
and install it in the same directory, run it after running (dotnetfx.exe if
necessary).

.... Now, once all of the above has been accomplished, DOWNLOAD and run each
of these two files IN order.

.... ( NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe)

.... (NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe)

.... Both of these files will ask for your acceptance and will take a while
to install (3-6 or so minutes). After the install finishes for both, go to
WINDOWS UPDATE and download any additional (.NET FRAMEWORK) and install
normally. This is what worked for me and finally removed the gold shield from
the bottom of my screen.

.... Wish whoever well and will be listening for your comments.

Because of the update given - assuming Windows XP is your OS...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Ignore the title... Try both methods and reboot. Visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan. Do not install
Optional Hardware updates. Come back - let us know...
