Windows 7 - Does Avast AV interfere with update?

Asked By Joosy

XP.

I installed Avast last week in place of AVG. Update notifications have been
appearing for quite a while. I ran update via widows update site but
received error 0x80072F76. Being used to switching down, Zone Alarm every
time update needs to run, I suspected Avast may be interfering with update
so, shut down its checking and tried again - no luck. Closed down the
system. On reboot, manually closed every Avast process - voila it updated.
Is this something common? Is there a way to work around it to de-complicate
update?

I paid a visit to this before trying 'stop Avast processes'. Nothing helped.
Incidentally, I was unable to d/l the guided help and still can't.

Was that while Avast was still running? Apparently it has a "feechur"
which causes scans to be done before the downloaded file is actually
copied by the application. In that case would act like a proxy and hence
could cause any of the problem symptoms associated with proxies.

Avast was running when I tried to download the file. Whilst Avast seem to do
the job, I'm beginning to prefer my old AV. To run update, it now seem I
need to shut down both Zone Alarm and Avast. As I sit behind a router, this
is not exactly fraught with danger but, it is a bother. Especially starting
up Zone Alarm - you could eat a five-course meal while vsmon takes over the
system!

If the router has a hardware firewall then advise you to dump Zone Alarm
and enable the native XP firewall. That should provide more than
adequate protection.

I have Avast installed on a laptop and have no issues with updates. The
Web Scanner Provider is not Enabled. That *may* be the issue, Joosy.
If you want Web Scanner Enabled then try adding the MS update sites to
the Exceptions list:

http://update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Zone Alarm has been known to cause issues with Automatic updates and/or
when visiting the MS update sites.

Thank you for the advice on the exceptions.

XP firewall does not control outbound traffic. I plan to get some other form
of protection in 465 days (ZA Pro contract expires). Mind you, the chief
cause of me thinking I need outbound control just clicks allow everything.
Hmm, come to think of it, ZA picked up something trying to run from a
newsgroup photo recently. Saved me spamming everyone in my Outlook and OE
contact lists.

Windows installer 3.1 & IE7 fails to install Windows 7 3 weeks ago I upgraded my motherboard, processor, RAM & display card. Since I can't clean install a new windows XP cause my old system has all needed programs & settings to my needs (very hard to get all of my programs needed) I used to option of repair install, inserted the XP CD that gave me "upgrading windows", & all went OK, new drivers installed, removed old ones. Funny thing is my IE7 is goes till the point where registry editing starts & stops installation & rolls back changes to IE6 & windows restarts. . Same when I try to update Windows installer to 3.1, it stops installation at the point or registry changing & rolls
