Asked By JamesJ

Microsoft Update has tried 3 times and 3 times have failed to install
Office Service Pack 3.
It downloads but fails to install.
I'm using XP sp2 and Access 2003. No other Office product.

Any help will be appreciated,
James

Put your Office 2003 (whatever it is) installation media in the CD drive
before installing it?
Have you tried downloading the entire package for SP3 and installing it
stand-alone as opposed to utilizing the web page?

You can download it manually and attempt to install offline independent
of Windows Update.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=923618
Scroll to the bottom of the link.
Two options are available.
Office 2003 SP3
Office 2003 SP3 for Multilingual User interface

While I did download the file, I chose not to install it preferring a
wait&see approach.
All updates prior to sp3 were current on my system(s) and Office 2003
sp2 completely functional for a long time, thus not broke.

Either through the update; or, through the stand alone update I am unable to
update with Office 2003-SP3.

Problem: I not only have Off 2003 Pro; but, also have OneNote and Frontpage
2003 that came on seperate CD's. Update does not prompt or provide
opportunity to swap CD's during the 2003 SP3 update. So, there is no chance
to insert original media.

And, OneNote seperate update also fails as well along with Outlook 2003
Security update.

Results: all updates fail; yet, continuously retry.

This is an annoying feature of Microsofts.

Consider, I do not repair cars; I take the car to a mechanic and they
diagnose and repair.

Microsoft should do the same and offer a revised update.

Downloading and installing Office 2003 SP3 manually seemed to
have worked. "Installation ...successful.".

Thanks,

You installed it somehow - correct? Put in the media you installed Access
2003 with.

That's "whatever it is" in reference to Office 2003. Access 2003 is a
component of MS Office 2003. You probably have media sitting around for
Access 2003 - otherwise it's hard to get it installed. Insert that media in
your system so that the updater has access to it while installing.

All the help appreciated and I will certainly give this a try myself (in the
midst of a move atm and media packed away) but I wonder if MSFT realizes they
could've saved me months of frustration simply by prompting for the install
media as they always used to? Sorry, rhetorical question. : )

Cheers.

I also have the same problem. I had tried installing the update with the
original Office 2003 CD in the computer and received the same failure. I
tried downloading the LOCAL INSTALLATION TOOL and tried running htat and
received an error message as well.

The equivalent decimal value for that code is 1935.
Try adding that number to your web search. ; )
