X-post to Windows Update newsgroup

What anti-virus application, anti-spyware application(s), and/or third-party
firewalls might all of these machines have in common?
===============================
Give the following a try:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by
an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot
Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you
may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows XP (KB942615)" via Add/Remove
Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right) and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered. Do NOT install IE7; please "hide" it, if offered.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

Windows 7 - KB942615 and IE6 SP1

Asked By Rui
12-Dec-07 04:18 PM
I have 11 machines with Windows XP SP2 and IE 6 SP1. Yesterday I ran Windows
Update on these machines and today they have all been getting error messages
where IE crashes referring to urlmon.dll.

When I uninstall KB942615 patch everything goes back to normal. The web site
that is guaranteed to make the browser crash is gmail.com.

Would someone who has MS's ear's please let them know that there is a
problem.

We ran into in issue rendering and printing IE pages to a bunch of
PostScript printer queues (Nashuatec and QMS)

Print Preview gives an empty page and nothing leaves the printer
Not reproducable using PCL and RCPS drivers

Same problem with IE7.

Can you describe how I.E. crashes? Are you navigating to a specific page?
Does it crash before your offered a window? Please describe what third party
applications you have installed.

Found a temporary fix... Disable HTTP 1.1.

Also so everyone knows, this only seems to affect WinXP not Win2K or Win2k3

Same problem here. IE6 xp sp2. After KB942615 unable to connect to internet
with DSL. Disbaled Comodo and AVAST and installed, same problem. Removed from
add/remove and all works fine. Hid the update on windows update page.
I assume the problem will get resolved soon.

I also applied the KB942615 and had the same problem. I removed the
upgrade, avg7.5, and zone alarm. It still did not fix the problem so
did a restore to day before and so far so good. Am currently
rebuilding everything.

Give this a whirl: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367 (IE6 running in
WinXP SP2 only)

Then re-enable HTTP 1.1.

Suddenly getting URLMon errors on 2 of my machines also. Upgrading to
IE7 fixed it, but I removed it used your solution instead. Thanks.

Before I attempt to uninstall as so many have stated, I noticed someone
said this had something to do with URLMON.DLL.

I remembered a command to use in Start --> Run ...:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll

I ran that and links spawned from Outlook emails that were causing my
crashes since installing KB942615, so far, have gone away.

Fingers crossed this is the actual solution.

Really this is a problem with the patch and we really shouldn't be
expected to do some cryptic things with our systems. While it's fine
for someone like me to go abouts doing this I can hardly trust anyone
on the floor to do this.

The fix will be a re-released patch that stops this crap, the SUS
server is meant to make my life easier not cause these problems.

Then again a wonderful addition to WSUS would be to allow me to
actually remove patches, the "Does Not Support Removal" flag on these
things is utter BS, having to go system to system isn't exactly what
I'd call productive!

I have 933 machines I am responsible for patching. This patch has been a
nightmare, and I have finally stopped pushing it. About 60% of the machines
it has installed on are ok. The other 40% have had the IE crashing issue. The
only commonalities in the machines are IE 6 Sp1 and Windows XP SP2. They vary
from dot net 1.1 to dot net 3.0 with sp1. Installing IE 7 fixes the issue,
but we are not ready to do that. I still have 300 machines that need this
patch and have not yet gotten to the end of users who are still crashing. To
run around to hundreds of machines and disable virus software and firewalls
is not a solution we would even consider. However, stopping the patch is. Yes
we tested the patches before pushing then organization wide, and the test
machines had no problems. We have tried clearing all the caches and temp
files to no avail. Uninstalling KB942615 does work. I think Microsoft
should test these patches on ALL of their employee’s machines for a month
before they even consider going public. I dread patch Tuesday every month and
wonder how much further our IT department is going to be put behind because
of pathces.

I totally agree! We have gone to WSUS 3.0 and cannot remove it. I am so tired
of sepending so much time on patches every month!

The official Microsoft fix can be found here:
'On a Windows XP SP2-based computer that has certain cumulative
security updates for Internet Explorer installed, Internet Explorer 6
may stop responding when you try to visit a Web site'

Look at the registry hotfix in this article.
