Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation

start at the top of the list, go to download center under get more updates,
at top of page you will see where it says search , pick (all downloads) next
type in the KB number on your list, and press go. next window says download,
this takes time to do all of them but is only way, click run and check
,restart later box , I did all 84 of mine and after works great

From a previous post on the (apparent) exact same issue as this: (see post
titled "71 updates fail repeatedly....").

(This wasn't my answer it was from TaurArian who replied to the previous
OP's question about update failures, I just noticed this second post about
the same issue).

Try the following:-

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each
one):-

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Had to repair an install for my neighbor whose dad is in hospice and this
info *saved the day*.

MS needs to put this info on thier home page and put it in a batch file or
something.

Cheers! to TaurArian and Andrew for reposting it (can't find the original
post)

Even if you searched only the newsgroups - did you come across this:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods.

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

I had the same problem after using Windows XP repair. I had 90 updates that
wouldn't install. I tried typing the steps listed above and it worked
perfectly!
Thanks for the great tip!

So the official reasoning/repair method is posted (again):

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)

Windows 7 Windows installer 3.1 & IE7 fails to install 3 weeks ago I upgraded my motherboard, processor, RAM & display card. Since I can't clean install a new windows XP cause my old system has all needed programs & settings to my needs (very hard to get all of my programs needed) I used to option of repair install, inserted the XP CD that gave me "upgrading windows", & all went OK, new drivers installed, removed old ones. Windows 7 OS: Windows XP is MUCH better than Windows Vista and here are just a few of the problems that prove this to be very true: 1) Incompatibility (Driver / Software handshaking issues) Nearly everything ran super smooth in XP from day one It was a root canal getting even some of the simplest software an I-net site. It's a horrible experience just looking your screen. 3) Instability XP crashed on me once in over five years. Vista crashed the first day! The list to waste commenting on Gates shotty work. MS is infamous for peddling half-baked software. XP was the exception. It is wonderful. MS hit a wall with Vista, a solid cement
Windows 7 over 600 viruses found - computer still sluggish after cleaning My friend bought a computer but needed to "purchase" the anti-virus after it's trial period ran. They use cable internet service. There was no anti-virus or firewall protection shortly after purchasing the computer. Kids accessed internet and MySpace frequently. I've run Trend Micro and it found over 615 virus's 2 MS Dos virus's and 1 internet worm. I thought of formatting the drive and reinstalling everything, they have basically nothing on the computer. They are running XP Home Edition. Any advice on how to clean?
