I have the same problem, I'm trying to install XP Pro. The only progress I
made was downloading Internet Explorer 7 to my laptop jump drive. Then I
installed IE7 on my desktop (it worked). Now I only have 87 updates to go! I
just bought a new copy of XP on ebay to upgrade from Media Center, wondering
if there's something wrong with the new software or ???

i have learned that that the machine occasionally seems 'overwellmed' and if
you download a few at a time it sometimes helps; at least you can figure out
where is sticking. It is one of those things like restarting the machine
witht the ghost errors and all is good.

None of those are the reason. Tried one at a time and all that. Why is
windows such a pain in the a$$ to work with?

Ignore the title - Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
2. Windows Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.

We can perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue. After trying
each suggestion, please go to the Windows Update site to check the result.
Thanks for your cooperation.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service.
If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet
or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again after
completing the update process.

Suggestion 1: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why? If you use both XP and 7, do you ever plan on ditching XP for good? What will you do when support is dropped to the point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware? Personally I am waiting for Windows 8 to release a second service pack. Windows Update URL no longer functions Windows 7 Recently (in the last 6 months or so) the link in my start menu for Windows Update (http: / / windowsupdate.microsoft.com / ) seems to find the server, but then simply shows a blank on the status bar. Searching for other avenues I found that this URL (http: / / www.update.microsoft.com / ) does correctly bring up the Windows Update website. Why does the original, published URL no longer work?
