I don't know what you have actually tried to fix the problem but have a look
at the following and see if it can give you any help.
Joan
1. Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or
by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
or if that's not the case -
2. How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are
repeatedly offered
an update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339
Abhijit replied...
Try this:
1) First, create a folder in C:\ drive called 'WUAGENT'. Its address:
C:\WUAGENT
Use this directory to store the Windows Update Agent file (see next step).
2)Use the link below, and downloaded 'WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe' to
C:\WUAGENT directory:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
3)Open the Command Prompt and force a re-install of the Windows Update Agent
with the following command:
C:\WUAGENT\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce
I hope this is helpful.

THank you Joan, folling the procedure to reregister the wups2.dll fived my
problee. I actually tried to just reinstall the windows installation service
whole (procedure 2) but it the installer actually said I didn't need to run
it.
My problems started when I installed SP3 on a new windows XP installation,
windows update would not successfully complete an installation after that,
but downloading the same files and manually installing them always worked...
I have been searching for an answer for a couple of das now, I am really
happy I saw your post.

Thank You Joan!
I used method one (1) to correct updates not installing on a new install of
Win XP Pro, after upgrading to SP3. Windows Update, Microsoft Updates, and
Auto Updates all failed and there was history of the attempted install.
Thanks Alot.

Glad you have everything sorted, well I assume you do as you didn't include
any quotes and I don't have your original message to go by <g>

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why? If you use both XP and 7, do you ever plan on ditching XP for good? What will you do when support is dropped to the point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware? Personally I am waiting for Windows 8 to release a second service pack. XP sucked when it first came out until
