It looks like this is a problem for a few of us running XP Pro. I've done
everything from trying to install with all firewalls down and AV ware off as
well as in Safe mode. I've tried to manuelly download and install with the
removal of the priviously downloaded update in the case that it was
currupted. Time andtime again it fails to install after initialization. The
log states something about conflicting files btwn SP2 and Sp3, however I have
the SP3 installed.
Any idea out there? I think the MS update crew is stumped....

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

Hi PA,
I spent 127 min on the phone with MS support. I'm reluctant to start up a
chat.
They concluded that SP3 already has this update as part of it's package. Why
it comes up as a critical update seems to be the mystery as well as the
0x8007f0f1 error. The windows update log reads of some incompatible files
with SP2 text. This makes sense as to why it will not install: the update is
for SP2 OS and not SP3. The fix is needed at the update site when it detects
which updates you need. SP3 users wouldn't need the fix so it shouldn't offer
it as an update.
I guess i'll just hide the update until WU gets this cleared up.

[Nigel started this thread: Are you Nigel?]

According to your other post, Windows Update was attempting to install
KB947864 (MS08-024; released 08 Apr-08) on your machine running WinXP SP3.

When did you install WinXP SP3? Had you just reinstalled Windows before
installing SP3? Was WinXP SP2 installed before you installed SP3? Did you
install SP3 via Windows Update or manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed SP3?

on the file MSHTML.DLL | Properties | Version: Copy the version to your
clipboard and paste it into a reply to this thread.

This is true if you are using IE6, but not if you are using IE7. (Assuming PA
Bear has correctly identified the update, KB947864.)

If you have IE7, please post this log. Have you tried downloading the update
directly and installing it?

Harry.

Trent you haven't provided any information at all regarding your problem so
I can only give a vague direction -

0x80070005 - Permissions issue. You can reset registry and file ACLs to
their Default state by following the directions here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx

In future start your own *new* thread and don't hijack another's thread as
their problem most likely is not the same as yours..
