Windows 7 - Windows can't check for updates

My computer will not check for updates. My last updates were installed
27/10/2008! I have opened the Update screen and tried to run the update
manually - this has not worked. I have tried restoring updates - nothing. I
have gone through many different troubleshooting suggustions and nothing has
worked. There is no error code pop-up either. It just says that Windows can't
check for updates. I am connected to the internet when I try to check. My
computer uses Windos Vista.
How can I fix this?

There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
