Windows 7 - Speed of updates

It is getting to be almost impossible to maintain a server these
days. The speed of updates in many cases has become simply unacceptable and
intolerable. I am talking about a brand-new server with 6 GB of RAM here, and
I have spent hours and hours installing updates that just sit there while
their progress meters do absolutely nothing, and the CPU does not even show
any activity. Microsoft must do something about this or else administrators
are simply going to say NO to updates, no matter how important, because a
server just cannot be kept in an unstable state that long. Automatic Updates
does not cut it for servers; it is just too risky. Server updates and downtime
have to be planned and scheduled in tight windows, not open-ended,
ill-defined extended periods of time. Doesn't anyone at Microsoft get it?

Sounds like someone should not be a system administrator or should use more
current installation media. ;-)

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware?
