Asked By patman

Windows XP SP3, Norton 360, DSL, Pent4 @ 2.66g. Tried both Windows & MS auto
update with same results.
For the last several, well 6 months now, the malicious software removal tool
(KB890830) seems to never completely install. When I click to install, it
prepares, then installs (full green iinstall bargraph) and the updates ready
icon in the toolbar goes away as if all ok.
Within a couple of minutes it pops back up as if I never did anything.
If I check ms update history I have successfully installed the tool 30+
times a month. help appreciated

Ensure your backups are current - the removal of Norton software can
sometimes cripple a computer.

Remove Norton completely. First through Add or Remove Programs control
panel and then, after rebnooting, ensuring it is completely gone using the
Norton Removal tool.

After the removal of Norton - ensure the Windows XP Firewall is enabled - no
exceptions allowed at this point. Install Avira AntiVirus (free) to replace
the duties of the Norton AntiVirus component.

Now cleanup and fix your update system...

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan with the following

I have the same problem. I simply turn off Automatic Updates, Open IE
goto windows update and download and install from there. Then go back
turn on Automatic Updates and when the KB890830 tries to install I
simply cancel it and tell it to not install ever. It is clunky but it
works.

Since you have the 'same problem' and you gave no further information about
your setup - I suppose you have the exact described system too.
