Most folks have resolved the 646 error by manually downloading and
installing the updates.
Check to see which updates are being offered and make a note of their
KB numbers.

Download the updates from the MS Download Center and
*** save *** them:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/default.aspx

EX: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (KB978207)
Go to the Download Center and enter KB978207 in the Search All Download
Center field. Click the magnifying glass icon to initiate the search.

You will see a list of different downloads depending upon the Version of
IE installed, the edition of Windows installed, and the system's
architecture.
If your system is Vista x86(32 bit) with IE8 installed, then choose

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows Vista
(KB978207)

If it is Vista x64(64bit) with IE 8 installed it would be

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows Vista x64
Edition (KB978207)

After you have download and *saved* the updates, close *all* open programs
and browsers.
Manually install the updates now.

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware? Personally I am waiting for Windows 8 to release a second service pack. XP sucked when it first came out until SP1 did not work, it had to enabled then disabled to be disabled for real. Sigh. . . Prior to this, accessing Windows Updates (via http: / / www.update.microsoft.com windowsupdate / v6 / default.aspx?ln = en-us) worked fine, near perfect, for over a year - using Internet Explorer 6. Note, I prefer not upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 - so please avoid suggesting same - read below to understand why. Recently, around the
