Windows 7 - Problem reading .DAT files

I used the transfer files and settings wizard on XP to create a .DAT file
which is now on 2 DVDs.
I made a backup disk just in case this didn't work but for some reason my
backup did not include .zip files which contain my most important data.

When I use WET (windows easy transfer) on vista, I can unpack the files onto
my harddrive but then get an error telling me that windows cannot find any
files in the 'store'. Even though I activated my copy of vista (yes it is
authentic software), I cannot get tech support.

Is there any way to fix this problem and get my data back?

Unfortunately - if you select to restore data on a cd\dvd it looks like WET
will not find the fast wiz file - however - if you select the option to
restore from external hard disk or network location - wet will give you a
browse option - then you should be able to browse to the DVD - Note you will
need to change the file type wet is looking for to Files & Settings Transfer

How do you restore an older version of the registry in XP? Windows 7 How do you restore an older version of the registry in Windows XP? I run Win98 on one of my computers and just had to restore an older screw it up. In Win98 that is done from the Dos prompt. But I know XP dont have a true dos prompt, so how would you do this restore? I dont need to do it, just curious. I asked in a Windows98 newsgroup (crossposted from this XP newsgorup) and no one could answer it. And fo the heck of it, would this the same method for Win2000, Vista, and Win7? (I also have Win2000 installed). Thanks Windows XP Discussions PM J. P. Gilliver John (1) AM J. P. Gilliver John (1) Bill Murray J. P. System Restore does that and a bunch more, but often ERUNT is all you need for their DOS prompt as well. For example, a Windows 7 or Windows 8 installer DVD, can be booted and you can get a DOS-like prompt there. Problem there is

You don't mention what kind of computer and what version of Windows XP is installed on it. If it is a major manufacturer (HP, Dell, IBM, etc) and it came with an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version of XP on it, with a Windows XP Certificate of Authenticity stuck to the case somewhere, you can try and obtain Windows XP Recovery Media from the manufacturer to reinstall Windows XP on the machine. Many of these OEM copies are tied to a particular motherboard BIOS
