error message in windows mail
Asked By JFC
20-Nov-09 10:29 PM
I have att uverse and have been using windows mail for some time to get my
emails from att-yahoo. I began recieveing an error message today and after
checking all of the settings with att they say it must be a problem with
windows mail. What next? Can I just reinstall windows mail as it is free
(my wife is used to it so I hate to change it) can I do that with out losing
all of my emails currently in there along with my contacts in other words
willit just write over the old windows mail and hopefully correct the
problem?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

I had the same thing happen; on about Fri 20 Nov I began to receive an error
message when I tried to get mail from my ATT Yahoo mail account. In the past,
I get the usual runaround from ATT who claim that Microsoft Mail "is a new
program and not fully tested, check with MS". I flounder around resetting
everything and then it suddenly is OK, but not this time. I have checked all
the settings (which I never changed) four times, and the connection to the
Internet works OK, so there is no modem or server problem. So, who is problem
is this?
Here is the error message:
Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

That feature is not implemented by any mail server I know of.

Does ATT have forums for it is customers to help each other?

Does ATT have forums for it is customers to help each other? That is usually
the best way to determine if an ISP is having problems; if they are having
problems and have forums for use by their customers, then many people would
be affected and people will post messages in the ISP's forums.
Yes, there are AT&T forums:http://www.dslreports.

Gary, there is something going on with the pop.att.yahoo.com server as
there are reports in several different forums and ngs about issues with
receiving mail. I can tell you that although the error messages differ
for windows mail vs. thunderbird, the end result is the same for each.
One cannot fetch mail in either on client unless the formerly required
settings of ssl and port 995 for the server are changed to use port 110.
I have verified that this change with both windows mail and tbird allows
the fetching of mail. I called att tech support, and after a short
2 person. The reply after the tier 1 person contacted tier 2 was that I
needed to call att connect tech, which turned out to be paid support.
However, before I got a chance to talk to anyone, I was disconnected. At
this point would feel comfortable suggesting that any longer term att
user suddenly experiencing an issue with pop.att.yahoo.com fetching mail
change the port setting back to 110 in an attempt to restore the mail
fetch. Hopefully there will be some type of resolution in the near future.

Thanks for your heads-up. I have checked the AT&T forums at
http://www.dslreports.com/forums/58
and some of the posts say that the mail servers are not working.
I am an AT&T-Yahoo mail customer myself, and my mail is
working fine, so it may be a regional thing.

Follow-up: I have been checking into this some more, and there are
widespread reports of the AT&T/Yahoo mail server malfunctioning.
It is not affecting all AT&T customers. One workaround is to change
the incoming server port from 995 to 110. That should also uncheck
the SSL option.

The dslreports.

The dslreports.com web site however is not an AT&T forum in the sense that
it is not in the AT&T web site and is independent of AT&T . That forum is
however useful, as is many other forums in dslreports.com web site.
Unfortunately most AT&T customers would not know about that forum. Verizon
for example has forums at forums.verizon.com that are available to anyone;
at least on a read-only basis. The Verizon programmers are lousy so the
Verizon forums and Verizon web sites do not work very well but otherwise they
are useful.
