About a week ago I made a movie on the movie maker and burnt it onto a dvd.
The dvd works still but when I try to open the file on movie maker from the
hard drive it gives me the message
the file C:\Users\user\Videos\highschooldvd.MSWMM cannot be opened because
it is not a valid Windows Movie Maker project file.
I dont understand because it is in the MSWMM format.
Can you help? I want to make more copies of my dvd.

That is weird. You have not moved or deleted it by mistake have you?
Could you just copy your dvd using your dvd burning software?

I am having this problem. I have previously published 2 DVD's. I have
just created another movie, but this time with music. I saved the file
and now it won't let me open it up either in Windows Vista Movie Maker
or Windows Vista DVD Maker. It says that it is not a valid windows Movie
Maker Project file. But it is saved with *.mswmm extension. I have
downloaded Vista Codec, shut down my computer and rebooted and I still
can't open the file. I'm very frustrated with this and desperately do
not want to spend another day putting together this 15 minute movie. Any
help would be appreciated. HELP!

Maybe there is an issue with an incompatible source file:
Have a look at the following articles:

None of these websites helped. I am using the appropriate file types,
video is .avi, music is .wma and pictures are .bmp. If you know of
anything else that can help I'd appreciate it.

Might be worth a try to recreate the project...
maybe your .mswmm file is corrupted.
There are many varieties of .avi and it may be
worth a try to use a .wav file for your audio.

Yep, there are over 800 different avi file types, and only dv.avi works
properly
bnana replied...
I am recreating the project. But in case it corrupts again, how would I
convert my .avi file type to dv.avi?

YOu need to find out what sort of avi file it is.
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/avicodec.html
Then use an app which will convert that file type to WMV, which would be my
choice of conversion, as dv.avi is not a file type that most conversion apps
will convert to.

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware? Personally I am waiting for Windows 8 to release a second service pack. XP sucked when it first came out until did not work, it had to enabled then disabled to be disabled for real. Sigh. . .
