Windows 7 - XP < -- > Vista networking problem

i've posted some time ago, and now, still have this problem.

boxes are as follows:

XP Home, Work Group: MSHOME
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- VMWare Bridge Protocol
- Service Advertising Protocol
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- QoS Packet Scheduler
- Network Monitor Driver
- NWLink NetBIOS
- NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
- Microsoft TCP/IP version 6
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Vista, Work Group: MSHOME
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- VMWare Bridge Protocol
- QoS Packet Scheduler
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Reliable Multicast Protocol
- Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
- Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
- Link Layer Topology Discovery Mapper IO Driver
- Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder

Problem:
sometimes, i can "see" the other computer on the LAN, sometimes i cant, for
both computers.

in addition, when trying to connect to the XP box from the Vista one, it
tells me i cannot access it... upon using the diagnose function, it tells me
that pinging the XP box does not return any reply.

on the good days when i could see the Vista box on the network from this XP
one, it'd tell me the Vista box isnt accessible.

while the 2 boxes are up, i tried to get them to ping each other. nope, all
get the "Request Timed Out" message.

its weird, coz i can share files/printers using this XP machine with all my
other XP ones.

how do i resolve this problem?

What are these two NWLink protocols good for? Remove them.

Are you actually using that? Remove it.

Are you actually using that? Disable or remove it.

Basic information is at: http://winhlp.com/node/179

Temporary visibility is often a computer browser problem, so
check that.

Does ping never work? That could be a firewall problem.

When you cannot see a computer, can you still access its shares
by typing two backslashes and the computer name into the Windows
Explorer address field? Example: \\myothercomp

Have you checked for firmware updates (to improve compatibilit) for your
router?

Hi
Maybe this can Help,
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,
http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.

Have a read of the info below; hope it helps.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, and no
identical usernames/passwords, you will be asked for a username and password
when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista
computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing
Wizard, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer
to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!).

In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network”
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File
and Printer Sharing.

Windows networking doesn't seem to work as it should . . . Why? Windows 7 I have got a couple of computers on two routers, of which one is ends, such that it will actually share printers and files over the LAN. I use Windows XP firewall on both ends. I have network-accessible storage that seems to work OK from because something's configured incorrectly. Is there any way to verify and remedy this? thanks!
