Windows 7 - Installing .NET 3.5 (don't install .NET 2.0 as a XPe component if you want to install .NET 3.5)

I've been attempting to install .NET 3.5 for the last couple of days and
this is what I have learned. If you installed .NET 2.0 component as part of
the rollup update or 2007 or 2008 feature preview you will run into problem
installing .NET 3.5 because .NET 3.5 requires .NET 2.0 be uninstalled and
.NET 2.0 SP1 to replace it. It is the uninstall that is the sticking point.
Here is the error message that it generates in MSI error log while trying to
install .NET 2.0 SP1:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 -- Setup has determined that
this version of .NET Framework is part of your operating system and cannot
be installed or uninstalled with this setup. Use Windows Update for all
future updates to .NET Framework. Setup will now exit.

After I read this error message I decided to consult the .NET install guru
to see what workarounds my exist. Mine and his comments are blogged here
(towards the bottom of the blog):

Now I have not yet tried to use the .NET cleanup tool I spoke about with the
.NET install guru, so their still might be hope of NOT having to regenerate
my XPe image. So if this works I'll post the results back to the news
group.

P.S.

I would like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed the .NET 3.5
framework and short summary of how you accomplished it.

I found out how to install .NET 3.5 when I have .NET 2.0 install as an XPe
component. If you would like to know, just send me $20..... Just kidding.
The information is contained in this link:

I encountered the same problem too.

What my XPe provider did was to remove all .Net Framwork components when buidling image.

Then I downloaded the installer of .Net Framework 3.5 and installed in the runtime image.

At the end of installation, an error message occurred but the installation was still completed.

Then I could install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 also (without any error message).
