The CD rom reader-writer of my PC HP Pavilion zd8410ea is not recognised
anymore by the system software. It is hence impossible for me to install any
new software or read any data with my CD reader/writer.
Can anybody help me to get my CD rom reader-writer properly installed again ?
I am using Windows XP - Professional version

Thanks in advance

again ?

When we reinstal a hardware component that we know
is prone to fail (e.g. any CD drive) with its own connection
to the rest of the PC, trouble-shooting requires a proven
sequence of tests, e.g. as provided in PC Help Desk in a
Book (Que, 2003) starting with the capacity of BIOS to
recognize drives as currently connected.

Because we know CD drives nowadays are so cheap
they are prone to failure, access to a second PC allows
us to swap in the doubtful drive as a quick-and-dirty
check whether it is in working order.

Your response stating the CD drives are cheap is only "partial" true.
CD / DVD drives are usually cheap for desktop / tower PCs. The HP
Pavilion zd8410ea is a laptop. Laptop drives are "expensive!!!"

nIndeed, this cd read/writer is built in in the pc ! It is not something I
added later !
I tried to download the driver software from the HP website and got the
following replies : "This is an upgrade of your driver" and thereafter the
system answers : "Don't recognize device".
In fact the problem started when I tried to install a modem to make
Internetconnections through gsm. The installation software refuses to
download on the pc. When returning to the computershop, it was found out that
my CD/reader-writer was not anymore in the list of devices (C disk, E disk, F
disk etc...) of my PC.
When putting a dvd or CD i the reader, the yellow light flashes for some
seconds and then nothing happens.

Why do you still use Windows XP? Windows 7 Give your reasons. Do you plan to upgrade ever? If so, when and why? If you use both XP and 7, do you ever plan on ditching XP for good? What will you do when support is dropped to the point where this OS will be problematic with new hardware? Personally I am waiting for Windows 8 to release a second service pack. XP sucked when it first came out until SP1. Even then, I find the moron-babysitting did not work, it had to enabled then disabled to be disabled for real. Sigh. . . Chkdsk / Scandisk Windows 7 I still use Windows98 most of the time. I am not fond of XP, but I have XP on my laptop computer, and must keep it to use the WIFI. One thing that really irks me about XP is that it no longer has Scandisk. Chkdsk is really a major pain to use dropped it in favor of this worthless and annoying Chkdsk. . . . . cannot access WINDOWS UPDATE successfully . . . keeps soliciting New!Get Microsoft Update today! Windows 7 I am running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition on 1 of 4 PC's and it is been updated through early April 2011. Prior to this, accessing Windows Updates (via http: / / www.update.microsoft.com / windowsupdate / v6 / default.aspx?ln = en-us) worked to understand why. Recently, around the middle of April 2011, each time I went to Windows Update, the page initially appears and I can briefly see the 2 buttons (of which Get Microsoft Update today!" I have no interest in Microsoft Update for my PC running XP SP3 Home Edition because my other 3 PC's, all running Windows XP SP3 Professional with Internet Explorer 6 are having no problems with Windows Update.
