Windows XP photo file property "Date Picture Taken"?

Asked By LJB

What metadata tag fills in the Windows XP photo file property "Date Picture
Taken"? I have scanned photos and added Exif tags for Exif.Image.DateTime,
Exif.Photo.DateTimeOriginal, Exif.Photo.DateTimeDigitized, yet "Date Picture
Taken" property remains blank. My digital camera photos all have that info
filled in and I have extracted all their metadata but those seem to be the
only fields with dates/time in them. I have been using exiv2 and jhead to read
and set the tags.

thanks
LJB

Windows Live Photo Gallery can change the
Date Picture Taken. And it can add that info
to a scan that does not have the date on the
advanced summary tab,
http://download.live.com/photogallery

And/or...maybe the following freebie would
be worth a try:

EXIF Date Changer

Thanks, John. That tool will do an offset time alright.

I was looking for something I could use to set the date directly. I found
one, ExifTool GUI, at
http://tinyurl.com/3xlubu
or http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm
which will do what I want. It is a Windows GUI for ExifTool by Phil Harvey,
http://tinyurl.com/jhwp2
or http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/.

Although I have not tracked down the exact metadata tag that needs to be set
for the Windows XP "date picture taken" property, I have found that the date
must be something newer than "1980:01:01 00:00:01". All the tools I have tried
have actually been working OK but Windows cannot report anything older than
1980.

My metadata editing tool preference has to be ExifTool,
http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/, by Phil Harvey and ExifTool GUI,
http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm. ExifTool allows
me to create a DOS batch file to process a large number of files at once,
setting the dates, GPS info, author and comment fields. ExifTool GUI is a
nice user interface to read and set one photo at a time.
