Windows 7 - Installing XP on Second Drive

Asked By Helixal

I'd like to install XP to a new drive. I have Win 2000 on an existing
drive. Is it possible to boot to either of these drives? What's needed to
make this happen?

Leave the drive with Win2K connected. Set the cdrom drive to be
first boot device in Bios. Boot from the WinXP CD and
during the installation select the second drive as WinXP OS drive.
That's all you need to do. WinXP will add Win2K to it is
bootloader and you will have a choice between which OS you want to use.

Thanks Rich,

I did not mention that the drives are SCSI. The Win 2000 drive is jumpered
as drive 0 (the boot drive.)
I assume that I have to jumper the second drive as drive 1. Does this
affect anything? Eventually I will get rid of the Win 2000 installation
and use that drive as a data drive. Can I designate the XP drive as the
default drive?

Al, though I know very little of SCSI Drives I am fairly sure that you
proceed the same way. Once XP is installed on drive 1, you can alter or
edit the bootloader to change the default drive to WinXP. The way to do
that is to rt click MyComputer when in XP and
select Properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovery-Settings>In the " Default
Operating System Window" click on down arrow and
choose which OS you want as default. Just a reminder, WinXP will place
the bootloader in the Win2K OS. If you decide to format
Win2K copy the boot.ini, ntldr and NTDetect.com files. You can see these
by opening WinExplorer in Win2K, go to Tools>Folder Options>View>Click on
Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected Operating System
files.
