Windows 7 - VPN DNS issue -- name queries go to wrong DNS server

Hello,

I have a laptop running Win XP SP2. I have the folowing problem:

I have a VPN set up so that I can connect to my departmental network
from home and other locations. My home connection is through an ADSL
modem/router. I also use the laptop at another office location where I
get a static IP over a T3 line.

The VPN is set up so that internet traffic goes through the internet
connection, and not through the VPN (split tunneling).

I have a DNS problem though: When I connect to the VPN (from either of
the above locations), all name queries seem to be automatically routed
to the VPN DNS server, which only knows about local names.
(I used a sniffer to verify this: when I ping, a name query for a name
appears on the PPP interface.). So, ping by ip works fine, but ping by
name fails. When not connected to the VPN, there is no problem. Also,
there is no problem with connecting to the intranet resources
(including printer).

No other user of the same VPN has this problem. I also have a second
computer, with Win 2K, that doesn't display this problem when
connecting to the VPN.

Any thoughts? I am a bit stuck. Thank you very much!
Vasilis

DNS order in XP on a VPN connection (not using VPN DNS servers) Windows 7 Hi, We have a bunch of clients running XP who connect to our 2003 VPN server. XP DNS Question Windows 7 Hi, Is it possible to configure XP to use a specific DNS server when a specific domain name is used? Example: if host tries to resolve somehost.example.com I want it to use DNS IP 10.10.10.10, but for all other hosts, I want it to use the DHCP assigned DNS server. Purpose: to resolve internal VPN hosts via internal DNS server, but resolve traditional internet hosts via standard DNS server. Windows XP Network Web Discussions
DNS query behavior on VPN Windows 7 Hello, I hope this is the best place to post my question. I have noticed something that has me puzzled about XP's DNS query behavior when XP clients are connected to VPN's. I have XP (SP2) clients who are members of domain SubA.DomainA.com. Their primary search suffix is the same as their domain as expected. Things get weird when connecting to VPN's which are not a part of this same domain. We have a partner we
VPN DNS ISSUES Windows 7 I have a remote user connecting to an MS PPTP VPN. The user can connect to VPN and ping by IP but it fails to properly resolve host names. It appears to be using the LAN DNS server instead of the ones specifid in the TCP / IP properties for VPN. Why does windows bypass the VPN DNS for the LAN DNS server? While connected to VPN I can: -ping the VPN DNS
