Windows 7 - Reuse downloaded updates ?

Asked By scbs29 on 05-Jul-12 08:32 AM
Hello all
I have just reinstalled XP Pro SP3 and updated with the latest
automatic updates from Microsoft.
Unfortunately there are problems with the instalation and the taks
will need to be repeated.
The automatic updates are stored on my hdd with names
$hf_mig$ - this contains folders which lead to update.exe files
$NtUninstall.....$
If I reinstall XP, is there any way of reusing these saved updates to
save downloading again from Microsoft ?

remove fred before emailing

use WSUS to get all of them on an external disk
the software includes also the "install" part

These [hidden] folders you are referring to ( i.e.; folders within the
Windows directory with names like: $NtUninstallKB980218$ ), are just the
UNINSTALL part of the update - that is; your original files that would be
replaced in the event you were to uninstall a specific update.

If you used these files in an effort to update your new XP installation,
you would probably be replacing system files with identical ones. Also,
the proper install procedure would not be followed, so even if you had the
correct update files to hand, registration of them would be needed and
copies placed into the ServicePackFiles and dllcache folders...
