Windows 7 - cursor won't highlight

In a word document, I can't highlight with the cursor. I can only use the
arrow keys and back up erase for any kind of formatting. I tried "protect
document" but it doesn't look to be activated.

This is only happening in Word... I can still highlight/manipulate in emails
and other programs.

You have corrupted your Word DataKey. From Start, Run, type in

regedit

and press enter. Navigate to the Word DataKey and delete it.
