Windows 7 - Can't uninstall Works on brand new netbook

Asked By matoo on 17-Feb-09 10:22 AM
on it. I will never use the preloaded Microsoft Works that came with my
Netbook. I tried to remove in from control panel but it is asking me for the
CD that it was istalled with (which does not come with the unit). How can I
uninstall it? It is looking for WORKS8.MSI in c:\acermb\office\cd2 which does
not exists on the netbook. I have searched the whole hard drive for that MSI
file & it is not there.

I contacted Acer tech support and this is what they say: "In order for you
to uninstall the Microsoft Works in your laptop, you will need to restore the
system to its factory defaults. Once the full recovery has finished it will
not include the Microsoft Works with the reinstallation." Of course this
doesn't make sense because if the product came with the program pre-loaded on
it you would think that it would be re-installed when you did a factory
install. I have spent too much time customizing this netbook to want to do it
all over again. I just want to uninstall the program! When I told them that
their answer was unacceptable they told me to call in to tech support & speak
to someone. I did that and got the same stupid
answer. Can you steer me in the right direction to do this uninstall?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Does the c:\acermb folder even exist? Or is that something you might
have removed during your customization?

The way Works is designed, it needs the install files in order to do the
uninstall.

Presumably Acer didn't give you a Works install CD. Did they give you
any install CDs?

It's not unusual for OEMs to make an installed image and propagate that
without all the files needed to reinstall or uninstall it.

Hi Michael:

No the c:\acermb folder never did exist on this brand new PC. They did not
give me any CD's at all not even a Windows CD.

In that case, the simplest thing is just to ignore Works. It doesn't
take up much disk space and shouldn't interfere with anything you are
doing.

You might try http://www.ccleaner.com/ if you are so bound and determined.
Use it at you own risk.

You do not say which Windows operating system you are using.

If Windows XP, you may be able to download the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility.

See this article for example on how to use.

Thanks Michael, Ken and David for your suggestions, but I solved the issue
the proper way. Please look for a post in this newsgroup called "Works 8
unistall". There is the way to successfully uninstall the program without the
CD.
