anybody got any ideas about all the disk activity on  my new xp pro =
machine? the activity led is going like mad even when everything's idle =
like it's just sitting at the desktop. this started after I uploaded a =
big file on the internet.

windows xp pro
pentium D 830
1 gb mem
20 gig E: drive (yes,winndows is on E:)
320 gig C: drive

maybe E: should be defragged?

One way to locate the problem is follow microsofts suggestion,run Msconfig.
Run as outlined in kb310560...But what you really should do is relocate xp
to C:  not run it on E:  This might need reinstalling xp (properly this
time),but
as you run xp now,it doesnt run quite right....

The last time I looked at FileMon it was very difficult to see the
wood from the trees. Would you use filtering in Ken's situation and if
yes do you have practical tips on it's use?

Hi Gerry,

For Ken's situation, I'd close down all the anti-virus/firewall =
applications temporarily and check if the disk activity still takes =
place. I use filtering only when I want to monitor one or more =
applications in particular. In this case, we don't know which one is =
causing the excessive disk activity (service or an app?). So, to begin =
with, I recommend running F'Mon without any filters set.

Just a "dumb side question" here, but ... if there is internet activity
going on when there should be none, wouldn't looking at the Task Manager's
Network graph and/or 'net status tell at a glance?  Especially if it's that
high in nature I'd think it would be easy to spot.  Also possibly in the TM
Process List.

Yes. But TCPView utility will give even more info on network traffic.
